Hello - I'm Mike and I'm interested in open standards for social networking. Currently working on a POC micropub implementation that runs on cloudflare's edge network platform as a worker using r2 storage. I'm currently working through the amazing test suite on micropub.rocks (kudos to all the folks in this community for that) and trying to understand micropub and activitypub better. I have been in web development since the mid-nineties,

Hello [Jan_Tuomi]!
#
capjamesg
Welcome to the community!
#
capjamesg
Do you have a personal website?
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
I do πŸ‘ it's pretty new though, not much on there yet: https://jan.systems/

#

There are so many rabbit holes I want to go down now.
#
capjamesg
Especially category theory.
#
capjamesg
I have been reading about graph theory lately and have learned so much!
#
capjamesg
I know they are unrelated, but suffice to say I'm more interested in math now than I once was.
#
mahboubine
[Jan_Tuomi]: I'd love to get a cassette player one day as well
#
mahboubine
maybe a sony walkman too
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
[capjamesg] that's a perilous rabbit hole! I have done some formal studies in discrete math (CS major) but those didn't really prepare me for category theory πŸ˜„ however I'm motivated because I love functional programming and the math stuff keeps popping up all the time. I figured I should just properly read a proper book on it instead of trying to synthesize something based on wiki articles and blogs
#
capjamesg
πŸ˜„
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
@mahboubine you totally should, they're quite affordable, at least compared to vinyl stuff. I tried looking for a walkman myself but those were 1) more expensive (brand recognition maybe?), and 2) far away. limited markets for that stuff in Finland where I'm based
#
capjamesg
Also interested in functional programming and language theory πŸ˜„
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
oh I've read your "100 things you can do on your personal website"! very useful
#
capjamesg
Ah! Amazing!
#
capjamesg
What are your plans for your website? (One of my favourite questions to ask people!)
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
I don't have any big plans for it really, I just wanted a place to write about projects and maybe share interesting bookmarks. So I figured I should just make a website πŸ˜„ The data ownership side of it is also a factor, I like to actually control my digital footprint as much as I can
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
I was also inspired by the idea of a "now" page. Learned about that from https://taylor.town/now
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
Maybe I'll add some interactive stuff too, I've seen people have comments or "πŸ‘‹" buttons on their sites. The concept of a webring is also interesting since that would help with discoverability I guess. Haven't really thought about it more than that πŸ˜„
#
capjamesg
What is a webring?
#
Loqi
A webring is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure https://indieweb.org/webring
#
capjamesg
There are a few webrings listed there that you can join ^
#
[Jan_Tuomi]
Nice bot πŸ˜„ and thanks

[Murray] it works surprisingly well! Obsidian has the best markdown editor I've tried so far, and it's only a little annoying to use on mobile. Getting the Obsidian client (graphical) to run on a non-graphical server was a bit of a pain though, but it had to be done since I was already paying for Obsidian Sync πŸ˜„

btrem
I have to /earn/ points to view his resume? Why should I bother?
#
btrem
Hmm, yeah, I'm not really keen on that site. "What's your email? ____ Free points! for sharing your data" Nothing free about that.
#
[tantek]
lololol this is both genius and hilarious
#
[tantek]
I can't tell if it's real or satire πŸ˜‚
#
[Murray]
@btrem hence my duality, I believe this is satirical or at least incredibly self-aware, but it's hard to tell
#
[tantek]
like cow clicker
#
btrem
If it's satire, then it went over my head.
#
btrem
Self-aware doesn't mean much to me. If you do something terrible, but wink while doing it, that doesn't make it ok.
#
[tantek]
I want gamification for my posting UI. I want points for when I post something positive. and more points when I go on a daily positive posting streak πŸ˜‚
#
[Murray]
also, as someone who used to work in the recruitment industry, I actually think hiding the CV behind a (very minor) task is a solid idea. It would weed out so much unwanted spam and benefits both sides if there's meaning to the interaction
#
btrem
But if it's satire, then shame on me I guess for being a dolt.
#
[tantek]
no shame either way btrem. it's easy to miss some of these things, especially across culture. like if you can detect British wit you are very advanced πŸ˜‚
#
[tantek]
it does look more like satire than serious. if it is being serious it is unintentionally hilarious πŸ˜‚
#
[tantek]
if it's ambiguously satire then that too is a feat
#
[tantek]
ambiguously satirical*
#
[Murray]
well, I unlocked gold mode and deeply regret that decision, then burned my remaining coins gambling...
#
[qubyte]
I must not rant about gamification.
#
[qubyte]
Maybe if I get some points.

Nowadays, the ultimate website gimmick would be a cookie warning pop-up that doesn't require consulting a team of security experts to understand all the ramifications after clicking "Accept."
