That looks good
#
aaronpk
thanks
#
tantek
hey that's great aaronpk!
#
barnabywalters
I'm using openphoto for the moment — next up for my local site is to implement webhooks for whenever I upload a photo there, creating a reference on my site
#
tantek
(except the Sign In link at the top goes to Yahoo?!?)
#
tantek
barnabywalters - why not use openphoto on your own site directly?
#
tantek
references to an external site like that are still fragile and are not indie web
#
aaronpk
heh yea it's still a flickr clone, I log in to the site with my flickr account
#
tantek
I mean, if you're going to refer to an external site, how is that any better than referring to Flickr?
#
barnabywalters
flickr doesn't have webhooks. But you're right
#
barnabywalters
thing is, at the moment I'm on crappy shared hosting, so I can't run system stuff and do the required image manipulation
#
aaronpk
actually they do
#
barnabywalters
can't find docs anywhere
#
barnabywalters
ah, they're just not calling it 'webhooks' :)
#
aaronpk
yes, hosting is always a challenge
#
barnabywalters
I need to renew my subscription now actually, so I might change
#
barnabywalters
I can't really justify spending much more than I am at the mo though
#
aaronpk
how much is that out of curiosity?
#
barnabywalters
embarrassingly, about £25 a year
#
aaronpk
cool. I think that's a pretty common price point for people
#
barnabywalters
I probably should upgrade. There've been a few times now I've wanted to be able to run system level apps
#
aaronpk
I highly recommend Linode (http://aaron.pk/linode) if you're into system-level management
#
mkowens
I'd actually recommend Rackspace Cloud Servers over Linode.
#
mkowens
It's effectively the same cost but drastically better service from my experience.
#
mkowens
It doesn't have as much "pre-rolled system configs" as Linode has, though.
#
aaronpk
orly? I'm curious what trouble you had with linode
#
barnabywalters
the 1p per hour pricing model is interesting
#
aaronpk
well it ends up being about the same as linode, linode prorates per day instead of hour tho
#
barnabywalters
Comes out to around £80
#
aaronpk
that particular machine only has 256mb ram which isn't going to get you very far
#
barnabywalters
well, more than that then. To run a personal website that no-one ever looks at, and a business portfolio that I need to move to another site (no-one ever looks at that either)
#
barnabywalters
how much ram would you say is required for a low-traffic site?
#
aaronpk
256 is fine if you aren't running things that do a lot of processing like photos, 512 can get you prety far tho

I figure I could justify the cost (£80 pa) if I hosted my personal and business sites on the same machine
