how is the remote participation going to work? IRC or video feed or what?

I think that's still under discussion. I know the idea of a Google Hangout was floated, and of course there's the IRC channel. If you have a strong opinion, please, suggest it :)

I'm open to google hangout if it's the best way of doing things — I'd rather not join G+, but if there isn't a better solution, then no problem

barnabywalters - I think we at least have Will Norris from Google (who works on G+) going this year - maybe we can get him to setup a G+ hangout for us

#
tantek
aaronpk - yeah exactly
#
tantek
we need a wiki page documenting the site/hosting/permalink deaths every year
#
aaronpk
yea great idea
#
tantek
so many to keep up with :(
#
aaronpk
you have a pretty good collection in your status updates
#
tantek
I've been tagging them ownyourdata
#
@codinghorror
I just joked that URL shorteners should creative commons their URL databases and realized, uh, they actually should
#
tantek
and actually, google search should work pretty good for that
#
tantek
brennannovak - yeah that's been in the works for a while
#
tantek
codinghorror just re-thought-it-up. happens often. smart people recreate what's already been thought/created.
#
brennannovak
tantek: heh, I see
#
tantek
ironically, often a simple google search will find the prior art

need some naming help
#
tantek
what to call sites that died
#
tantek
site-deaths?
#
tantek
dead-silos?
#
tantek
I'm leaning toward site-death
#
aaronpk
the only problem with "site" is that we aren't collecing a list of dead sites per se, just a list of sites that had permalinks from users
#
aaronpk
i.e. it's not very relevant when a social network site goes offline, but something like blogger would be
dascher joined the channel
#
tantek
most social network sites have permalinked content
#
tantek
public permalinked content even
#
aaronpk
hm I suppose so
#
tantek
I think we can focus on site deaths rather than app deaths (e.g. if gmail died)
#
aaronpk
yes, gmail is a good example of something not to include in this list
#
aaronpk
so I guess "site" describes it well then
#
tantek
alternative suggested names welcome!
