@ashedryden Adding to others' research on this for @indiewebcamp.
#

oh white papers...
#
ianloic
they're better than webinars..
#
tommorris
offers a webinar on his latest white paper.
#
tommorris
so, the only concern I have with an IndieWebCamp specific code of conduct is that sometimes we might have people who come along and want to show their work on a particularly risque or opinionated site
#
tommorris
and how we'd deal with that.
#
tommorris
some people are naturally rather more X-rated than others
#
tommorris
I've got a friend who publishes erotic fiction on her blog. I'd be fine with talking about the publishing processes she uses, but others might not.
#
tommorris
similarly, if a professional sexist or homophobe came along (and it annoys me that one can be that and paid money for it), I'd probably not want to spend much time helping them join in
#
tommorris
previous blogging-related events have had issues like that (think of the Mena Trott incident at Les Blogs)
#
tommorris
tantek: thoughts?
#
tantek
hey tommorris
#
tantek
I think there are multiple perspectives to consider yes
#
tantek
the indieweb appeals to everyone who wants to be individually expressive (whatever that means to them), potentially beyond what the TOS of a silo may allow
#
tantek
I think we can separate what people want to do on their "indieweb" site, vs. how people behave and conduct themselves at IndieWebCamp in particular.
#
tantek
(the public event)
#
tantek
e.g. I'm sensitive to the fact that ToSs (or equivalent such guidelines) has been used to censor LGBTQ* materials.
#
tantek
that being said, I'm ok with asking people to not demo how they publish x-rated posts at indiewebcamp in person. I think that's a reasonable request.
#
ianloic
+1
#
tantek
no one is saying they shouldn't publish whatever such material on their own site as they wish. we just don't need to see explicit demonstrations of such in-person @IndieWebCamp
#
tantek
I would put anything discriminatory (non-inclusive as Mozilla likes to put it) in the same category.
#
tantek
people can post whatever on their own sites
#
tantek
this section here is good: "I. Inclusion and Diversity" http://www.mozilla.org/about/policies/participation.html on this topic
#
tantek
reworded a bit more generically: "Some may identify with activities or organizations that do not support the same inclusion and diversity standards as IndieWebCamp"
#
tantek
"When this is the case: (a) support for exclusionary practices must not be carried into IndieWebCamp activities."
#
tantek
"(b) support for exclusionary practices in non-IndieWebCamp activities should not be expressed in IndieWebCamp spaces."
#
tantek
now that being said (about posting whatever you want on your indiewebsite), the use of an indiewebsite to harass, threaten, troll etc. is no better than someone doing so on Twitter or other social media silo.
#
tantek
so if someone attended IndieWebCamp and used their indieweb site to harass, threaten, troll a speaker at IndieWebCamp, that would be unacceptable. I've never seen this happen or heard of even a hint of this happening so I don't foresee any such problems.
#
tantek
However, by making it explicit that that kind of behavior (even if it is virtual rather than in-person) is not acceptable in the community we create a more respectful space for a more diverse community.
#
tantek
tommorris does that answer your questions / address your concerns re: the example of the person who publishes erotic fiction, and how to consider/deal with the example of a sexist or homophobe / other hate-speech publisher?

#
tantek

#
tantek
AaronPK do we have a high res logo somewhere?
#
tantek
(we should have one on the website for download for such reasons - press/media etc.)
#
tantek
do we need indiewebcamp.com/press-kit ?
#
aaronpk
let me check
#
tantek

#
tantek
hey Tom Morris - happy happy

@indiewebcamp
@pfefferle what size and format does the magazine want for the logo? We can setup http://indiewebcamp.com/press-kit accordingly. ^@t

im not saying anything about the tech here, but selfcloud has done a great job of branding/presentation for similar ideals to unhosted/indieweb. http://ifmw.mobi/
#
tantek
lol .mobi
#
donpdonp
iknowrite? :)
#
tantek
donpdonp - I've lost track of all the ephemeral slick branding/presentation "idea sites" that have popped up over the years. It's just a matter of paying a marketing firm some $ - nothing intellectually interesting / challenging about it.
#
tantek
and OTOH, it's almost always a disappointment - flashy site, little substance.
#
tantek
I'm a big believer in slow, steady, sustainable growth of actual useful/usable things. Let the flashy ephemera distract others, while we get stuff done.
#
tantek
we can always pay for marketing after we're successful ;)

gwenbell

#
gwenbell

#
gwenbell
how are things in the indie web? how is your rules & regs thing coming?
#
gwenbell
just watched the big lebowski for the first time

gwenbell: Mark it 8, Donnie!
#
gwenbell
hahaha
#
gwenbell
now i get like every cultural reference i ever missed
#
gwenbell
also saw star wars, 4, 5 and 6 for the first time at the end of 2012
#
gwenbell
so now i'm definitely up to speed on what it means to be human

gwenbell
what are y'all doing today?

tantek: have you deployed any node apps yet?
#
tantek
gwenbell - not yet - I'm working on CASSIS.js apps instead.
#
tantek
(can be deployed anywhere that runs PHP)
#
aaronpk
it's still way easier to deploy php than anything else :)
#
gwenbell
what is that?
#
Loqi
that is an awesome idea
#
gwenbell
not php, i know what that is
#
gwenbell
oh ya i looked at your repo on github
bnvk joined the channel
#
gwenbell
i need a white russian for this
#
gwenbell
so you built falcon with cassis
#
gwenbell
i got some server space on a vps so i can play with node - i'm no longer restricted to playing w/just php
#
gwenbell
node's what i'm excited about right now
#
aaronpk
that's cool
#
aaronpk
I just heard about https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing which has some pretty darn good prices
#
aaronpk
all my stuff has been on Linode for 7+ years, it would take a lot to get me to switch even if it's cheaper
#
tantek
so I think the summary of POSSE is still too technical and doesn't explain it's significance in sufficiently generally understandable terms.
#
gwenbell
i'm using one that i can pay for in btc
#
tantek
I'm going to try adding a bit
#
gwenbell
i guess digital ocean doesn't take btc yet, but i'll dig deeper - thanks, aaron

comments on intro of http://indiewebcamp.com/POSSE#POSSE ? Is it more understandable/compelling than before? We should get this right to help explain how "indieweb" is different from previous efforts.

barnabywalters: tantek left you a message on 2/11 at 2:51pm: remind me what are web action delegate patterns?
#
barnabywalters
ah, right — so "web action delegate URIs" are the fancy name I’ve given to URIs which present a configurable UI for performing an action, which can be customised via params in the URI
#
barnabywalters
kinda like a callback URI (which I did consider for the name) but presenting a UI to help perform an action instead of performing it automatically with no user intervention
#
barnabywalters
and the pattern with the same name is the practise of software allowing a user to set these custom URIs as delegates for certain actions within an application, probably with URI template placeholders which are auto-filled depending on the context of the delegation
