adactio: do I take your lack of response about <cite> to mean you are not bothered about how it is defined?
#
adactio
No, it's just that I'm very busy. Also, I don't think I have anything more to add other than what I've said already. Sorry about the lack of response. Like I said: busy.

adactio:ok no problem its not something I personally feel strongly about or have the requisite understanding of, but was asked about it so brought it up for discussion and pinged you/tantek as you 2 seemed to be advocates, if people do want to see the advice in the spec change they can particpate to make it happen

Stevef
adactio: and a heads up that the HTML WG is open for business
#
adactio
Cool. Thanks, Steve

tantek: hi see http://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2013-02-15#t1360934284 conversation I had with adactio about <cite>, trying to gauge level of interest in changing spec
#
dpk
what's wrong with the spec for <cite>?
#
dpk
bleh. the 4.0 spec was wrong. draft-ietf-iiir-html (HTML 1.1) just said "citation"
#
dpk
HTML 2.0 defined it specifically as the title of a work
#
dpk
3.2 was unclear ("citations or references to other sources")
#
dpk
4.0 messed it up.
#
dpk
it came in in html.dtd,v 1.3 i think, with a bunch of other elements inspired by LaTeX added by DanC. <cite>'s progenitor in LaTeX was for titles
#
dpk
4.0 messed it up and we can't ever un-mess it, of course
#
dpk
all because of that "Harry S. Truman" example …
#
Stevef
dpk: others disagree, I don't have any particular inclination
#
dpk
i would tend to leave it as-is, or to include a note saying "use of the <cite> element to mark up a name is deprecated"
#
dpk
even 3.2 wasn't *that* unclear. "source" tends to refer to a document or other "published" thing rather than a person …
#
Stevef
right
#
Stevef
surprised at how much its used for people names
#
dpk
yeah. i never even knew people were using it like that until i heard of this debate …
#
Stevef
will provide a link to a data dump when i get a chance
#
dpk
perhaps also add an <author> tag that means the same?
#
dpk
HTML 3.0 actually provided semantic markup for citing the source of a blockquote!
#
dpk
it's a shame HTML 3.0 never took off really, it had some good ideas
#
dpk
we still don't really have this in HTML5 … you can use <figure> and <figcaption> around the blockquote of course, but it's still a rather poor substitute imo …
#
Stevef
gotta go get my kids catch you later

@BarnabyWalters Thanks! Great question. I love the indieweb because the ownership is clear: It's your stuff, on your site or elsewhere.

@benatkin
I think the market is, on average, more supportive of #foss and #indieweb products and services than seed stage and angel investors are.

got this error from IndieAuth: You just authenticated as 'https://twitter.com/benatkin' but your website linked to 'http://twitter.com/benatkin'
#
aaronpk
benatkin: you should update your link to https then it will work
#
barnabywalters
benatkin: I think that was discussed earlier, the conclusion was that it’s a feature not a bug
#
benatkin
cool :)
#
barnabywalters
IIRC reasoning was: if we open up one sort of ambiguity in the URLs, that’ll lead down a slippery slope and loopholes will emerge
#
benatkin
yeah it's a patches welcome type of issue :)
#
benatkin
it could reject it in a more pleasant way
#
aaronpk
yea, could catch that case with a better error message
