related - I'm attending Google I/O this year - any other IndieWebCampers making it out to that?
#
tantek
maybe we can gang up in the G+ sessions ;)
#
aaronpk
omg you got a ticket!!!
#
aaronpk
caseorganic is going
#
aaronpk
i didn't get in
#
tantek
aaronpk - I've never gone before
#
aaronpk
cool! me either
#
tantek
was offered an invitation - checked with folks at work, decided it was worth at least going once, in the hopes of connecting with more Google engineers and perhaps establishing contacts for better open standards support.
#
tantek
I'm going to be cautiously optimistic.
#
tantek
aaronpk - you should lobbycon it!
#
aaronpk
hah I was thinking about it!
#
aaronpk
lobbycon! love it

ohai pdxpeople, i am visiting from nyc and would love to grab drinks, chat about indie publishing and tech in general. i plan on grbbing dinner around hawthorne and then exploring, whose up to meet there or nearby?
#
aaronpk
jedahan: hey! welcome to pdx!
#
jedahan
of course im super open to suggestions, my todo list is (decidedly un-indie :/) https://foursquare.com/jedahan/list/portland
#
aaronpk
"YOU'VE BEEN TO 9 OF 14 PLACES"
#
aaronpk
i think that's talking about me!
#
jedahan
yeah interesting
#
aaronpk
that would be hard to do on the indie web :/
#
jedahan
i mean none are in hawthorne, someone told me to start at bagdad theater then wander
#
aaronpk
yea that would work
#
aaronpk
also belmont is pretty cool
#
aaronpk
or if you go the other way there's some good stuff on division/clinton
#
aaronpk
my neighborhood is NW/Downtown tho
caseorganic and scor joined the channel
#
jedahan
Well I am staying downtown, and have spent a decent amount of time (relative to my stay) up in the dante's area
#
jedahan
Managed to catch sinferno which was awesome and unexpected, and then ground kontrol industrial night last night, the food trucks are pretty tasty so far
#
jedahan
I just wanted to see whats outside downtown, but I got a whole week soo...
#
aaronpk
been to Departure yet? or Clyde Common?
#
jedahan
open for anything really
#
jedahan
neither
#
jedahan
oh Departure is at the Nines, cool
#
jedahan
and clyde's brunch looks tasty
#
jedahan
oh and communal tables at clydes
#
jedahan
i like that
#
aaronpk
i'd be up for meeting you at Departure in a bit! it's great on the roof when it's sunny out!
#
jedahan
ahh awesome
#
jedahan
lets say 6:30 there?
#
jedahan
and meet via twitter?
#
jedahan
/ any microblogging that has mentions really :-p
#
aaronpk
cool! actually can we do a bit later like 7? still getting some things done at the office

aaronpk mind if I invite some museum people, blasted out via #mw2013
#
aaronpk
sure! what are museum people?
#
jedahan
I'm here for a museum technology conference, called Museums and the Web
#
aaronpk
oh crazy!
#
jedahan
Yeah, some are really interested in independent words and data ownership
#
jedahan
and interoperability
#
jedahan
I doubt anyone will come on short notice, as the conference hasnt started yet
#
jedahan
(you should definitely follow @nealstimler
#
jedahan
so up to you if I send a message out to the world, if you are more comfortable I'll hold off
#
aaronpk
go for it!

is activitystream over websockets a thing?
#
donpdonp
like could I suggest that to a new newsfeed site without looking crazy?
#
barnabywalters
donpdonp: hm… wasn’t the indieweb butler thing activitystreams over websockets?
#
@donpdonp
@GitStreams another todo: provide an activitystreams API over websockets so new entries are pushed to me. #indieweb http://pusher.com/tutorials/realtime_activity_streams
#
barnabywalters
the only bit of the code I looked closely at was the browser extension, so it might not have been
#
donpdonp
barnabywalters: oh i dont know about butler
#
donpdonp
heh. i got the hashtag right.
#
tantek
donpdonp - I think the IndieWeb answer to "Is X a thing?" is "Are you building X on your own site?"
#
donpdonp
tantek: I had a feeling you'd say that :)
#
donpdonp
tantek: ok well what I need to build then is a desktop (or web) activitystreams-over-websockets consumer!
#
barnabywalters
on which note: is anyone actively using indieweb butler? looked like a really nice system
#
aaronpk
tantek++
#
Loqi
tantek has 10 karma
#
donpdonp
the thing about building stuff is someone has always already started it and its best to connect with those projects first.
#
donpdonp
aka evanpro and pump.io
#
tantek
donpdonp - somewhat - except "connect with x" doesn't scale as x keeps increasing in number
#
tantek
hence, connect here, on #indiewebcamp first
#
tantek
and try to draw those folks in
#
tantek
e.g. I keep seeing julien tweet asking about his web subscribe button thingie
#
tantek
but I never see him in here
#
tantek
Twitter sucks for discussion/conversation/feedback
#
tantek
(compared to IRC)

barnabywalters: thx

#
tantek
barnabywalters - is that on the project page?
#
donpdonp
the commend system takes an email address and looks up the openbadges list to check for the 'donpark.org blog badge', which then displays a textarea or not
#
donpdonp
try your own address, it should "shake red", then try don.park@gmail.com and it'll go through
#
donpdonp
note there is no authentication of the given email, its just a test of interacting with openbadges.
#
donpdonp
also there is a link to acquire the 'donpark.org blog badge'

has anyone used or built any indieweb food/calorie/fitness tracking solutions?
#
barnabywalters
tantek: I’ve been thinking of adding a graph view to http://waterpigs.co.uk/notes?tagged=steps — does that count?
#
aaronpk
neat idea
#
tantek
barnabywalters is that from fitbit?
#
barnabywalters
tantek: no, I have a primitive pedometer :)
#
barnabywalters
one with an LCD display
#
tantek
so you're entering those by hand?
#
barnabywalters
tantek: yep
#
tantek
barnabywalters - what you're doing definitely counts
#
tantek
even if "all you're doing" is posting notes with the hashtag #steps
#
aaronpk
totally
#
tantek
or are you enforcing the syntax of, the word before "#steps" is the number of steps as an integer?
#
tantek
like is that a picoformat that you made up?
#
tantek
if so - you could document it, and then anyone could mine the data, make graphs etc.
#
barnabywalters
tantek: pretty much a picoformat, yes — there are also a couple of other rules
#
barnabywalters
to deal with missing/excess counts
#
barnabywalters
eventually I will mine the data and/or make pretty graphs, yes
#
barnabywalters
and correlate with other data
#
barnabywalters
well, compare
#
aaronpk
correlating/comparing is a difficult problem!
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: I’ve not tried it with this data yet — i’d be interested to hear your thoughts/problems you’ve had with similar data
#
aaronpk
mostly the challenge is all the data is stored and collected in drastically different formats, with different axes
#
donpdonp
any comments on the openbadge thing? anyone try it?
#
barnabywalters
donpdonp: I had a go, yep — looks cool!
#
barnabywalters
is there a way to associate badges with domains rather than email addresses?
#
donpdonp
barnabywalters: ok. cool. thx
#
donpdonp
barnabywalters: i believe its all email based
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: hm, yes, I suppose so
#
barnabywalters
although if there’s a data point every day, it’d be fairly easy to compare — say, with temperature
#
aaronpk
yea, that's the trick, you have to normalize everythign to the same interval
#
barnabywalters
perhaps I should start adding location data to the #steps notes so I can map out the average number of steps per day in different locations
#
barnabywalters
at the moment that’s only back home vs. in iceland, but that alone might be an interesting comparison
#
barnabywalters
or just figure out how my walking patterns change throughout a week/month/year
#
aaronpk
i have temperature data for every 5 minutes around my current location, still need to correlate that with other data :)
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: is that something you’re recording?
#
aaronpk
yes although apparetnyl it broke in december :(

barnabywalters

#
tantek
ok Barnaby, feel free to add more details of your "steps" work here: http://indiewebcamp.com/note#Steps
#
aaronpk
hm I think if I published quantified self data on my site I would make a new stream for it, it wouldn't be part of my notes. would probably be still relatively plaintext
#
tantek
aaronpk - don't know until you do, right? ;)
#
aaronpk
yep :)
#
aaronpk
we'll see what happens
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: with steps, I decided that one short note a day was tolerable on my website, but I don’t tend to POSSE them unless that day was a particularly interesting outlier
#
barnabywalters
or the walking was primarily with some other people — the “Had a great day walking X #steps with Y and Z” kind of thing
#
tantek
ideally you'd POSSE them to whatever fitness sharing silo your friends use
#
barnabywalters
I think evanpro posts his BMI or some similar number on identica
#
barnabywalters
or, is he using pump now? either way, that is another example
#
tantek
barnabywalters - if you can find a URL for that, please add it to the wiki
#
barnabywalters
tantek: just looking now

“evan prodromou bmi” is my contender for today’s weirdest search term competition
#
barnabywalters
http://evan.status.net/tag/bmi — looks like he stopped 6 months ago, I’ll ask him why
#
barnabywalters
maybe he came across a problem worth documenting
#
tantek
well there's the problem that BMI doesn't measure enough of the right things
#
tantek
it's only good for coarse evaluation - not something you can really optimize on its own
#
aaronpk
could be the "high friction" problem

aaronpk: as far as high friction personal data collection goes, my iOS data is right up there ;)
#
barnabywalters
lots of copying+pasting+emailing :/
#
tantek
aaronpk - agreed about the high friction problem :/
#
barnabywalters
any thoughts on how google glass (or preferably an open source hardware clone) might reduce personal data collection friction?
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: it may have the potential to do a bunch of the things on your list
#
barnabywalters
ambient sound recording is particularly interesting!
#
barnabywalters
I’d love to try that
#
aaronpk
i don't know, the glass is basically an external display for a phone
#
aaronpk
it's not designed to be always on
#
barnabywalters
problem with ambient audio is that’s a *lot* of data to store, even more to process
#
barnabywalters
transcriptions would be really cool
#
barnabywalters
one of my friends has a cousin who records a lot of his conversations — or used to. Often without telling the person being recorded, to mixed results
bwelds joined the channel
#
aaronpk
heh yes
#
aaronpk
transcriptions would be awesome
#
aaronpk
but even average noise level as a number would be interesting
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: absolutely. have you read The Art Of Noise?
#
aaronpk
the problem is what interval is that recorded? every hour? every 5 minutes? every time another event occurs?
#
aaronpk
no I haven't heard of it
#
barnabywalters
aaronpk: I’d probably go for once every 30 seconds OR if there’s an outlier
#
barnabywalters
like the life recording cameras
#
aaronpk
looking for outliers is where it gets interesting
#
aaronpk
only reporting "unusual" activity
#
barnabywalters
RE art of noise: I just finished reading it — it’s like a 5 page PDF: http://www.artype.de/Sammlung/pdf/russolo_noise.pdf
#
barnabywalters
from 1913, about futurist noise music
#

I was quite impressed with tropo’s automated, free audio transcription. Not sure how well it’d hold up to ambient conversations — it certainly wouldn’t differentiate between different speakers, or handle people talking over each other
