xtof - do you POSSE your /blog/tweets posts to Twitter?
#
xtof
tantek i did not posse it at the moment. think I could do it tomorrow with a better understanding. research in progress.
#
tantek
I just figured that everything in a directory called /blog/tweets would show up on Twitter :)
#
xtof
currently focused on translations… ;) just trying to catch how to make line break in notes http://christopheducamp.com/w/2013-04-20#twitter_:_comment_ins.C3.A9rer_un_saut_de_ligne_.3F
#
xtof
I will try to document the small wp-extension I use : i have the choice to POSSE or not to POSSE (aka "broadcast")
#
tantek
ah ok
#
tantek
I'm POSSEing every note just to make copies
#
tantek
also that way I don't have any posts on Twitter that are not on my own site

eschnou: tantek left you a message 7 hours, 44 minutes ago: just saw http://eschnou.com/home?tab=1, including syndication of the pingback from aaronpk - well done! that's awesome that you got all that directly from parsing the h-atom on his permalink page.

bretolius: to be fair, I reckon Wikipedia would have caught that within a few days. we're pretty good at that. but twitter etc. yeah - fail

at least all the stuff in upcoming.org has incremental IDs, so writing an incremental crawler should be pretty straightforward (for anyone that wants to do so).
#
tantek
tommorris - dammit. just saw your message and post. 10 days is ridiculous.
#
aaronpk
was interesting to hear about andy baio's attempts at scraping the data. seems yahoo started returning blank responses after too many requests in a row
#
eschnou
hello all !
#
eschnou
aaronpk, your mention finally came ok, needed to fix a bit of parsing on my side: http://eschnou.com/entry/testing-indieweb-federation-with-waterpigscouk-aaronpareckicom-and--62-24908.html
#
eschnou
aaronpk, you don't have mf2 markup and I was not processing mf1 one properly.
#
aaronpk
very cool!
#
aaronpk
ah, yes haven't gotten around to mf2 yet
#
eschnou
aaronpk, yup, I find it awesome as well, true federation ! Next challenge is to have federated threaded conversations :-)
#
eschnou
tantek, got your messages via Loqi, thanks for your comments !
#
Loqi
woot!
#
tantek
eschnou - thanks for helping move the indie web forward!
#
tantek
aaronpk - any challenges with adding h-entry #microformats markup?
#
tantek
hopefully it should take you a matter of minutes (if not seconds)
#
tantek
and if it takes longer / or is more challenging - I'd love to know about it
#
eschnou
tantek, my pleasure, it is only the third time I try to get some federated stuff working, maybe this one is the good one :-) I like the simplicity of pingback + markup.
#
aaronpk
the challenge is always figuring out the right classes to add where, since my markup is always slightly different from the examples. also making it not conflict with my css
#
tantek
we should base our federation formats/protocols on microformats2
#
eschnou
tantek, it has been easier to implement than Salmon :-)
#
aaronpk
tantek: federation using mf2, google juice using mf1 then?
#
tantek
since it *should* be the easier to markup / publish mf2
#
tantek
aaronpk - mf1 *only* for the top level item of the page - because that's all that search engines care about.
#
aaronpk
that's interesting, what exactly do you mean?
#
tantek
but mf2 for *everything* on the page - so that it works for the "your web page as your API" use case
#
tantek
aaronpk - search engines are using microformats typically for page-level search results / link-preview type stuff - which means the top level thing on the page
#
aaronpk
google seems to have found my author card on all my notes/articles/home page
#
tantek
that's through rel=author
#
tantek
and google treats rel values as page-level also
#
aaronpk
oh I get it
#
tantek
so it found your rel=author link to the page about you - which has an hCard as the top level thing
#
aaronpk
like when the URL represents a single entity, and the mf1 markup on that page does as well
#
tantek
there's always a top level entity for a URL
#
tantek
btw - this is the latest FAQ I wrote-up because it's being asked more and more:
#
tantek
think of mf1 as the simplest way to get link-previews
#
tantek
and mf2 as the simplest way to turn your page into an API for the data on the page
#
aaronpk
is that true going forward as well? or only because google has impelmetned mf1 but not mf2
#
tantek
it's the best advice as of right now.
#
tantek
in the future, when things change, we'll update the advice accordingly :)
#
tantek
it will of course work just fine going forward
#
tantek
so 1 mf1 object plus many mf2 objects is future friendly
#
tantek
the nice thing is, google has shown evidence of parsing new microformats over time
#
tantek
last year they added support for hAtom
#
tantek
this year they added support for hMedia
#
tantek
and they're doing so quietly, without announcing it
#
aaronpk
yes true!
#
tantek
so as more mf2 is deployed, they'll add support for it as well
#
aaronpk
so i'm wondering at what point it makes sense to deprecate mf1 markup
#
aaronpk
or at least stop adding new mf1 markup
#
tantek
also, I'll be talking with the rich snippets folks at Google I/O, doing my best to make it happen sooner :)
#
aaronpk
OH great
#
tantek
aaronpk - well, I used to (last year) add mf1 markup to everything
#
tantek
as of this year I'm only adding it for top level items on the page
#
tantek
so maybe next year?
#
tantek
it's pretty trivial though. a single mf1 microformat object is trivial to add to a page
#
aaronpk
wonder if any of them can be dragged to the party at jillian's? i'm probably going to be there, but not at google io
#
tantek
send me the event info/invite and I'll do my best :)
#
tantek
also - we can plan a microformats dinner/meetup/drinkup during I/O as well
#
aaronpk
great idea!
#
tantek
so yeah - let me know when you've added uf2 to aaronparecki.com and your posts and we can add your site to: http://microformats.org/wiki/uf2#Examples_in_the_wild
#
tantek
eschnou - hopefully you can rely more and more on uf2 markup
#
tantek
since adding uf2 markup is WAY easier than the harder step of supporting sending/receiving webmentions ;)
#
tantek
alright - I'm off to switch locations
#
tantek
aaronpk - hope to see uf2 when I get back :)
#
eschnou
tantek, webmentions are on my todo list, one baby step at a time :-)
#
tantek
eschnou - webmentions are on my todo list too: http://indiewebcamp.com/Falcon#Working_On :D
#
eschnou
tantek, but the most pressing need right now is to have a client where I can consume the feeds of others....
#
eschnou
not sure if I'll integrate in storytlr or build something else, there is pros/cons for both.
#
tantek
cool. feel free to create a Storytlr page on the wiki to track these things if you like
#
tantek
e.g. a "main Storytlr page" to link to from http://indiewebcamp.com/projects#Storytlr
#
eschnou
tantek, will do, I need to document what has been done so far.
#
tantek
(note how the other projects nearly all have "Main article: …" at the start of their sections)
#
tantek
even if you just do a braindump like what aaronpk did with his p3k
#
tantek
it would be great
#
tantek
wiki pages can start small :)
#
tantek
btw aaronpk - love your braindump of p3k: http://indiewebcamp.com/p3k
#
tantek
awesome and inspiring
#
tantek
ttys!
#

aaronpk, I have two issues with indieauth: 1) if I link to http://twitter... on my site, it fails because it retrieve https://twitter and does not seem to understand it is the same thing :-)
#
eschnou
2) why no support for openid inside indieauth ? I would rather login with my openid than through twitter.

#
eschnou
xtof, was your wordpress post yesterday supposed to send me a pingback ? Did not get anything :(
#
aaronpk
eschnou: there was some discussion about http/https, and we decided that we should not assume they are the same URL since they are not actually
#
aaronpk
also there's a bug with the twitter implementation where if twitter wraps your URL in their t.co, it doesn't follow the redirect and doesn't match up
#
aaronpk
(that's something that needs to be fixed on the indieauth side)
#
eschnou
aaronpk, ok, I'll switch to https on my end then.
#
aaronpk
as for openid, it used to support it, but I was having a lot of problems with it getting really weird errors back from openid providers inconsistently, seemed to be some issue with the omniauth openid plugin
#
xtof
eschnou : that was just a note sent yesterday via twitter-tools extension for wp. it does not work and the note was not POSSEd… Will try later after translations :)
#
eschnou
xtof, ha ! ok :-) no worries, let me know when you want to try to federate.
#
xtof
eschnou sure. back to blog now for a test on a simple article to be POSSEd. Will drop the link soon.

xtof, got your pingback and it is displayed here: http://eschnou.com/home?tab=1, unfortunately it is empty, it seems I did not recover any microformat (h-atom) markup from your page. I need to implement a fallback.
#
eschnou
xtof, ok, the problem is on my end, I'll work on it, fix it, and will let you know when done so we can test again.
#
xtof
