nm think I found it
#
tantek
oh hey bret
#
tantek
yeah it's kind a obv, but if you want my public W3C official use address - it's the cs.stanford.edu one
#
tantek
that starts with tantek@
#
bret
cool :)

#
bret
I'm thinking that maybe some kind of super simple google app engine type tool + client side JS is the way to bring dyanic stuff to static pages
#
bret
for my site
#
bret
trying to process lots of data from cross domain sites using client side JS seems way too daunting right now for me

tantek: did you submit something to talk about as well?
#
tantek
I sorta did - general indieweb demos. And I asked for an extension to send in details.
#
tantek
anybody wanting to demo realworld indieweb stuff can ask for an extension by emailing Harry
#
tantek
(details in my post)
#
aaronpk
I just wrote up a chunk on indieauth. was considering also throwing in something about distributed/syndicated comments, talking about what everyone is doing with comments on eschnou's post, and how news.indiewebcamp.com fits into the mix as well

#
bret
aaronpk: wouldn't it be cool if we couldld get calegator to implement indieweb events?
#
poppy
somewhat indieweb
#
poppy
anyone have opinions on GitLab?
#
bret
its self hosted github!
#
bret
its a nice project
#
poppy
yes
#
bret
it looks fairly involved to run though
#
poppy
yes
#
poppy
hence asking first ;)
#
bret
what are you thinking you want to do?
#
poppy
also, their own demo appears to get stuck on "loading commit data..."
#
bret
weird
#
poppy
run my own code repo hosting
#
poppy
and not use trac, which I'm not much a fan of
#
bret
the simplest thing there is just git over ssh
#
bret
to a trusted shell account
#
poppy
well, have a web interface and URLs for code repos
#
poppy
because rare is the day I would expect someone to download a repo before seeing what it is about
#
poppy
and I already use github, but I feel weird having github be the "canonical" url for any project
#
bret
yeah that is a little weird
bnvk joined the channel
#
bret
i know the feeling
#
bret
github goes down too
#
bret
git lab looks awsome
#
bret
but I didn't have the patients to figure it out
#
poppy
i have workarounds for github going down, just want a web interface
#
bret
for now I am sticking with just mirroring to github and locally, but I should set up redundant mirroring on bitbucket too
#
bret
the other thing you see a lot of is gitweb
#
bret
looks as ugly as trac, as confusing too
#
poppy
hmm.
#
bret
let me know if you find something like gitlab, but smaller scale/easier to run
#
bret
seems like that would be a good project for someone
#
poppy
Starting to think a static site generator on commit hook isn't a bad path
#
poppy
Alright, thanks for verifying the bad-install smell
#
poppy
thanks bret!
#
bret
poppy: are you using jekyll?
#
poppy
i am trying
#
poppy
are you asking because of my patches?
#
poppy
i'm currently running nothing but my own terrible CGI scripts
#
bret
no, just contextual guess
#
bret
poppy: found some really interesting tools that can be used to self host jekyll blogs racently
#
bret
recently*
#
poppy
bret: it's not that it's hard, it's that I'm not sure how I feel about the thing yet, and a lack of time
#
bret
http://prose.io/ brings an awesome posting UX to jekyll/other git repositories
#
bret
it runs nearly 100% client side in the browsser
#
poppy
i'm one of those strange folks who is more comfortable at the command line :)
#
bret
https://github.com/developmentseed/jekyll-hook offers a github like jekyll server
#
poppy
although for others, this is interesting. Thanks for the pointer, bret
#
bret
poppy: I understand that, I'm trying to be that way too, but its bought to do CLI on mobile
#
bret
tough*
#
poppy
yes it is
#
poppy
i am still trying, but as a partial compromise bought a very light laptop
#
bret
that helps

Indiewebbers: I've been thinking …it might be better to have IndieWebCamp UK on Saturday, September 7th rather Sunday, September 8th, to maximise usage of people in town for dConstruct.
#
adactio
Or possibly even have a two-day IndieWebCamp
#
adactio
There's a Clearleft office-warming party on the *evening* of Saturday, September 7th, and Maker Faire would be going on all weekend, but I reckon the afternoons should be free.
#

adactio, in particular, a 2 day indiewebcamp would be excellent. what with how much progress has been made even in just the past 3 months, I have a feeling we'll easily be able to make excellent use of 2 days
#
adactio
tantek: cool. Part of the reason why I want it to be on Saturday too is that I might have to duck out on Sunday afternoon to catch a plane to Germany.
#
tantek
Demos at 4pm Sunday, finished by 5pm worked well for the recent indiewebcamp
#
tantek
so we can just schedule demos early enough that you can stay for that before you have to duck out

aaronpk and anyone else who is POSSE threading replies, what to do when the post you're commenting on (reply to) doesn't explicitly link to its syndicated copies?
#
tantek
in fact let me go mark it up as such
#
tantek
or no wait, I'll do that later (as part of Falcon)
#
tantek
doesn't directly rel=syndication link to its copy on Twitter
#
tantek
closest I can find to a "tweet" copy of that article is this: https://twitter.com/EFF/status/354709580456009730
#
@EFF
http://t.co/Z4hHtz8RCb, @CarlMalamud and @EFF score major victory for free speech and open government: https://tiny.eff.org/2bWK
#
tantek
that tweet copy does follow enough to make it possible to do original-post-discovery
#
tantek
* link is at end of tweet
#
tantek
* link at end of tweet is at the same domain as the website of the account - "eff.org"
#
tantek
so if, as a good indieweb citizen, I reply-to the original, how am I supposed to have my code (Falcon) auto-discover the Twitter POSSE copy?
#
tantek
any thoughts?
#
tantek
or is that a case where we should just link to the indieweb article (on eff.org) and not bother trying to thread POSSE replies on Twitter?
#
tantek
OR should a posting UI (e.g. on Falcon) attempt to rel-syndication auto-detect the POSSE tweet copy, and failing than, present a simple text field to paste one in manually?
sandeepshetty joined the channel
#
benwerd
tantek: I've leaned towards simply including a second text box. I'm auto-detecting rel-syndication links these days but don't want to guess where it's not explicitly present, and would still like to reach out on Twitter where possible.
