somewhat to my surprise, I now accept comments on articles, though I’m not showing them yet http://waterpigs.co.uk/articles/data-export.json
#
barnabywalters
this was more of a test of making the comment accepting code a little more generic and reusable than anything else
#
barnabywalters
next thing is to extract the mf cleaning+normalising stuff within the comment accepting code so I’m using the same functions everywhere I’m accepting mf data

erikmaarten - re: UGT on http://indiewebcamp.com/IRC#Conventions - does anyone actually use that in practice?
#
tantek
it's certainly not a practice here in this channel - so I'm not sure about including a (hypothetical?) top-down suggestion like that on the wiki page - which has otherwise documenting fairly real-world/emergent behaviors.
#
tantek
nevermind that the reasoning behind UGT seems flawed
#
erikmaarten
It might be a bit of a stretch to say that it's a convention in this channel, but it's convenient.
#
erikmaarten
Why is it flawed?
#
tantek
I prefer to say what time of day it is where I am when I (re)join the channel, and I appreciate it when others greet relative to their time of day - in both cases, it provides additional context for the speaker.
#
tantek
it's not "a bit" of a stretch, it's not a stretch - both imply some aspect of actual truth being stretched. there is no truth behind UGT being a convention in this channel - it's not at all a convention.
#
tantek
the problem UGT is trying to solve seems to be driven by inexperienced IRC users, or perhaps very insular IRC users that only engage from a single geo-local community.
#
tantek
in practice, in more internationally aware channels (this one, #microformats, #whatwg, etc.) I haven't seen the problem that UGT tries to solve.
#
tantek
so yeah, I'd basically write-off UGT as a dumb idea
#
erikmaarten
oh, right.
#
tantek
also, any solution designed to "solve" pedantic behavior (as described on the UGT page - of people nitpicking each other) is always going to fail as true pedants always find some other detail to be pedantic about.

I have experienced the (admittedly not very serious) problem it tries to solve, but then I might fit in your category of inexperienced IRC users

tantek: I believe the principle that we can standardise human communication has been shown to be fairly unimplementable in practice.
#
tantek
tommorris - the French are still trying, well at least in France ;)
#
tommorris
tries to send emails that are RFC 1855-compliant. Most people don't.
#
tommorris
I mean, cripes, it's hard enough getting Mozilla, Apple, Google, Opera and Microsoft to agree on HTML and CSS, let alone getting everyone on the Internet to agree on how to write an email or use IRC etc.
#
tantek
tommorris - hence everyone ought to just publish their own personal communication protocols ;)

#
tommorris
the only overriding rule is "don't be a dick". as the recent discussions around Linus Torvalds demonstrate, not everyone adheres to that principle.
#
tantek
tommorris - even that rule is difficult, as it assumes a vague/general understanding of social niceties, which is often not the case for some folks, e.g. some with Aspergers.
#
tantek
so that being said (about greeting times)

Idea! (sorry another one for aaronpk ) Ability to send web mentions via IRC when referencing a site with the web mention or ping back header, coming from the line in IRC that noted the URL

maybe restrict it to users with voice or something
