aaronpk: at work we have lots of little apps. we only use html+mf2 and pull to communicate between them. most apps publish a feed.
#
shaners
other apps poll/pull every 10 minutes.
#
shaners
they check timestamps/etags to see if the page has changed since last check
#
shaners
if it has, then we parse out all of the h-entrys
#
shaners
compare the list of h-entries in the feed with our list of uids of already fetch h-entries.
#
shaners
then we save only the new ones
#
shaners
right now they only poll/pull from one url. but it could cycle through N feeds doing the same thing.
#
shaners
sounds like Indie Feed Reader to me, right?
#
shaners
aaronpk ^
#
aaronpk
interesting, I suppose so
#
shaners
then it's a matter of what ui we'd do with with the fetched entries
#
shaners
but, aaronpk, it's already built in rails. i'm so sorry. :P
#
shaners
which means it won't run on your computer or server
#
aaronpk
oh i can run rails
#
aaronpk
i run a bunch of ruby apps already

thinking about giving remote sites permalinks on my own domain so that I can show the page in context of my site
#
aaronpk
for example http://werd.io/view/5202ba48bed7deaf49392cd1 would have a URL on my site of http://aaronparecki.com/external/werd.io/view/5202ba48bed7deaf49392cd1 which would show his h-entry in my design along with my comments below
#
shaners
aaronpk: i think that's weird.
#
shaners
i feel like, let his post be his site. you replies already show his content in your design as context.
#
aaronpk
i had the thought after I replied twice to a single post
#
aaronpk
also this would give me something to link to when the site disappears or turns into a parked page
#
aaronpk
just a thought. super not high on my priority list
#
shaners
isn't that what the indie archive is for?
#
aaronpk
yeah it would be using that in the backend to store it
#
shaners
i think you should optimize for "the site still exists, i should link to that" and if/when it dies then host your own copy of the linked to page
#
aaronpk
absolutely
#
aaronpk
i didn't say i was going to *link* to the copy on my site, just that it would exist :)
#
shaners
that's not crazy then
#
shaners
sorry. misunderstood.
#
aaronpk
ah yea, subtle

Could microformats-2 essentially ally with JSON-LD so that the two were consistent? At least on the vocabulary side of things? MF2 could be be the representation of the data inside of HTML and JSON-LD could be the JSON representation
#
bret
The vocabulary from uF2 should be reusable no matter the representation, it might be worth trying to keep it consistent with something like json-ld, or at least a subset of some of these other specs
#
neuro`
Good evening.
ozten, BjornW and shaners joined the channel
#
shaners
bret: mf2 already has a json representation
#
bret
right
#
shaners
the burden is on them get compatible with that
#
shaners
not on mf2 to support a second json representation
#
bret
well, I certainly wouldn't advocate for a second representation ;)
#
shaners
not to mention there's a pretty Religious™ separation between the Semantic Web / Linked Data crowd and microformats. Which is why they keep re-inventing the everything instead of building on top of the mf work
#
bret
I wonder if we/me/someone should negotiate that at least a subset of the existing vocabulary be made consistent
#
bret

#
bret
aaronpk: what logo is tantek talking about?
#
aaronpk
webmention.io
#
bret
ack, should I start using that?
#
bret
instead of pingback.me
#
aaronpk
they both work the same, but sure
#
aaronpk
they're both pointed at the same app
#
bret
oh ehe
#
aaronpk
pingback.me is registered through 2014, i'll probably let it expire then
#
aaronpk
june 2014
#
bret
do they share the same data?
#
aaronpk
yea, literally the same app
#
tantek
aaronpk - I wonder if it'd be worth collecting some donations for indiewebcamp to pay for things like hosting/domain fees for the site and community sites like pingback and such
#
shaners
aaronpk tantek: i've been thinking lately that our domain is too event focused
#
tantek
shaners - indieweb was taken ;)
#
shaners
and that maybe we should get indieweb.io for the wiki
#
tantek
so the bikeshedding ship sailed back in 2011 :P
#
shaners
and keep indiewebcamp.com for the event specifically
#
shaners
or at least, use both for the same wiki
#
tantek
we should at least get a shortener for indiewebcamp.com
#
tantek
like we have ufs.cc for microformats.org
#
shaners
pipe down, Loqi
#
tantek
but subdividing domains for different purposes is basically a huge waste of admin time
#
tantek
sorry to say shaners
#
shaners
then i propose we migrate to indieweb.io with indiewebcamp.com redirects to the .io
#
tantek
sounds like busy work
#
tantek
rels with URLs are really ugly looking, so I'm going to register rel="webmention"
#
aaronpk
tantek: +1 for rel="webmention"!
#
aaronpk
i'd be up for collecting donations, this stuff is starting to add up!
#
tantek
shaners - also - note that indiewebcamp.com is CC0, so if you want, you could setup a mirror at any domain you wish to put the time into registering, hosting, and implementing.
#
aaronpk
I think I had indieweb.me last year but I let it expire
#
shaners
rolls his eyes at tantek
#
tantek
at this point, indiewebcamp.com has a lot good google juice too, so any proposal to move away from it would need to justify the work involved (or volunteer to do so, shaners ;) ) and the work to restore its linkrank/pagerank etc.
#
aaronpk
I also kind of think having a .com is important
#
tantek
aaronpk I agree
#
shaners
ok ok. i think you're both wrong. i think we're still early days with this thing. and i think the camp.com domain is too event specific. but i'll move on.
#
aaronpk
iwb.io is available for a url shortener, heh
#
tantek
shaners - I think you're misweighing priorities
#
aaronpk
I see what you mean about the *camp.com being too event-specific, but I think there are other solutions
#
shaners
tantek i think you're not thinking long term enough
#
aaronpk
like de-prioritising the event stuff from the home page
#
tantek
shaners - I'm thinking long term to the point where we keep so much of this content on our own pages that we're not even using a wiki-silo/commons any more ;)
#
aaronpk
keep in mind that camp also means "A group of people who think alike or share a cause"
#
tantek
aaronpk - good point
#
tantek
like which camp are you in
#
aaronpk
which camp are you in? the microformats camp or the schema.org camp? ;)
#
aaronpk
neither, i'm in the indieweb camp!
#
shaners
all the time we're hash tagging things #indieweb, but our domain is indiewebcamp. i think building/making/proving is part of our long term success. but part of it will be the branding/marketing.
#
aaronpk
if indieweb.com was available I would take it. but it's not worth the hassle and ridiculous cost it would take to get it
#
shaners
we should reframe the messaging on the wiki to match the "which camp are you in?"
#
Loqi
it is probable
#
aaronpk
shaners: that sounds fine with me. I do like the idea of bringing more of the indieweb content up to the front and moving the event stuff to the event-specific pages

tantek: i'm glad you like the new webmention.io logo! I kind of liked the P better, but this will do.
#
tantek
aaronpk, shaners, I do like the "call to action" aspect of keeping the next indiewebcamp info/details at the very top
#
aaronpk
yeah, something on the home page for the next one is good, but right now pretty much the whole home page is about the event
#
tantek
above all, the in-person events help form stronger bonds that help scale a stronger community
#

#
Loqi
aaronpk has 197 karma
#
aaronpk
tantek: ok here you go, async webmention loading without jquery! https://gist.github.com/aaronpk/6207445
#
tantek
aaronpk - a while ago I edited the home page to be split partly about the next event on top, then indiewebcamp in general (what is the indieweb etc.), then some archive notes about previous camps
#
shaners
tantek: you can drop the type=text/js attr on your script tags
#
tantek
one thing we could is simplify the home page to just: 1) next indiewebcamp, 2) about the indieweb in general, and then 3) most recent previous indieweb (so folks looking for what just happened can find stuff)
#
aaronpk
that is reasonable
#
tantek
also - having all the team photos on the home page I think humanize the effort quite a bit
#
tantek
humanizes
#
tantek
great photos :)
#
shaners
i like the team photos too
#
tantek
it's something that strongly distinguishes the indiewebcamp community from any other open source community
#
shaners
aaronpk: how did your ride go today?
