I really need to fix my video implementation, so apologies for uploading to a silo, but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxYf7xhebOI
#
KevinMarks
you can upload to archive.org too, as long as you CC it
#
benwerd
good call
#
tantek
either way, POSSEing to YouTube is a good thing for enabling easy embedding and handling traffic
#
aaronpk
benwerd: doh! wonder why my comment didn't come in in realtime!

Loqi
aaronpk meant to say: benwerd: doh! wonder why your comment didn't come in in realtime!
#
KevinMarks
agreed, but archive.org is a good place to host audio or video files too - they handle traffic and are much less likely to take you down if you use something PD that someone else claims as copyright
#
aaronpk
also awesome video!

#
KevinMarks
which reminds me, I need to check where all the audio files for tummelvision.tv ended up as they were hosted in various places

heads up - the OSCON Call for Participation (i.e. proposals for talks) closes on the 30th: http://www.oscon.com/oscon2014/public/cfp/308
#
benwerd
aaronpk: there's a short pause while I wait for the comment to show up, but I figured the basic indieweb reply functionality is still impressive
#
benwerd
tantek: ooh. good reminder.
#
tantek
in case anyone was thinking of giving a talk on some indieweb awesomeness they have built or invented recently ;)
#
tantek
(or both)
#
tantek
benwerd, exactly - had you in mind
#
tantek
as well as aaronpk (IndieAuth, micropub), snarfed (Bridgy), anybody else?
#
jonnybarnes
benwerd: what exactly is that your clicking to replay and rsvp. is it a firefox add-on?
#
aaronpk
benwerd: yes, still pretty good. but realtime would have been better (sniff)
#
aaronpk
oh yes I should definitely talk about indieauth+micropub! i suspect there will be many more implementations by june!
#
tantek
especially since everything you guys are doing is open source - this seems quite appropriate
#
tantek
OSCON 2014 is July 20-24
#
benwerd
jonnybarnes: it uses the Firefox Social API - https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Social_API - they're actually mini-windows to my site, so not an add-on as such
#
aaronpk

#
tantek
aaronpk, please also pass along a reminder to caseorganic, I'd like to see her propose her IndieWeb talk as well for OSCON. That's certainly a crowd that needs to hear her story and her message.
#
aaronpk
good thinking!
#
tantek
(I'd even say it should be a keynote)
#
aaronpk
she's doing the talk on Monday in portland again!

hopefully the extra material we added to the wiki will help
#
aaronpk
I wonder if we have enough connections to oscon people to get her to keynote
#
KevinMarks
would a variant of my LeWeb one work?
#
tantek
aaronpk - likely. Perhaps just ping Tim directly.
#
aaronpk
tantek: yes I believe it will. we're planning on going over the talk on sunday
#
jonnybarnes
has caseorganic got a blog post summarises her story?
#
KevinMarks
who's running OSCON this year? is it still Edd?

I am having issue debugging my webmentions sending. At the moment I am testing it by attempting to send mentions to http://indiewebcamp.com/webmention as Loqi picks it up immediately. Is there a better way to do it?
#
aaronpk
KartikPrabhu: you can use this post to test if you want http://aaronparecki.com/notes/2013/10/12/2/indieweb
#
KartikPrabhu
thanks aaronpk
#
aaronpk
!tell benwerd happy late birthday! is your and barnaby's birthday the same day?!?!
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
KartikPrabhu
aaronpk: if an incorrect webmention is sent to your test post what happens?
#
aaronpk
you won't see anything
#
aaronpk
I process everything asynchronously
#
aaronpk
everything except really obviousl failures returns "202 Accepted"
#
aaronpk
(obvious failures such as missing a "source" parameter)
#
aaronpk
I'm considering returning a URL you can use to check on the status of a webmention, but I don't think that's terribly useful for a production system, might just leave that for a debugging utility like webmention.io or indiewebify.me
#
KartikPrabhu
ok thanks.
#
KartikPrabhu
snarfed: any updates on the bridgy mention bug/issue with my site? I don't see any mentions from bridgy in by database
#
snarfed
hey KartikPrabhu! actually i don't think you're signed up right now
#
snarfed
i think i did see one go through though. i'll find it
#

aah yes, I am not. I have to rework my webmentions thing. too many little issues

Hm the whole webmention thing is still a bit strange, I send a webmention to http://aaronparecki.com/notes/2013/10/12/2/indieweb and it shows the <title> of my blog post page but doesn't link back so one could read the text.
#
cweiske
Jeena, it links on the date
#
cweiske
but it seems your webmention request is wrong
#
cweiske
both aaronparecki.com
#
Jeena
hm perhaps it is just a bug then because it links to its own domain but with my path
#
cweiske
can you show the POST data?
jonnybarnes joined the channel
#
Jeena
but I assume it tries to read the data from the h-card on my page which only has the name, no url, no photo, etc.
#
cweiske
maybe aaronpk has a bug there and doesn't like the port or so
#
cweiske
I mean the link contains the correct path
#
cweiske
just not the correct host
#
cweiske
and port
glennjones joined the channel
#
Jeena
yeah, I will test it later again from my real website
#
Jeena
or, hm my HTML looks like this: <a rel="author" class="p-author h-card" href="/">Jeena</a> perhaps he just takes the / for the author
#
Jeena
and the port could be the problem with the link back
#
cweiske
Jeena, your link is totally fine
#
cweiske
it's aaronpk's job to make it absolute
#
Jeena
oh ah, and my post url is in u-url too and it looks like <a href="/test2">...
#
cweiske
why do you put the url to the page itself in the html?
lukecyca and josephboyle joined the channel
#
Jeena
cweiske, 1. it has always been done that the <h1> with the title in a blog post was a <a> with the url to itself and 2. I thought this is that u-url was for I thought
#
Jeena
What am I supposed to do so like aarons page would show the title and also my teaser instead of just the title? I already added <meta name="Description" content="Some new teaser"> but it didn't get posted on aarons website
#

and I also have <aside class="p-summary">Some new teaser</aside>

do people have recommendations for hosting services that are relatively cheap/easy for people to set up and get started building a page to get onto the indieweb?
#
snarfed
sure! http://indiewebcamp.com/web_hosting is probably a good start
#
snarfed
the first question i'd ask them is how technical they are and how much code they want to write: some, none, lots?
#
snarfed
that helps orient on a spectrum from e.g. wordpress.com/dropbox/github pages at the bottom up to a VPS or PaaS at the top
#
tantek
snarfed - that might be a good question to add to that page in a "Considerations" section
