Hi all! I'm setting up indieweb stuff on my WordPress site... Wondering if there is a best practice for self webmentions or self pings from the same site?
#
kylewm
hi davidakennedy, welcome! i send webmentions to my site just like everywhere else
#
kylewm
I might not understand the question though. what are you wanting to do?
#
davidakennedy
@kylewm Thanks for the answer... Yeah, kinda hard to explain... What I mean is: You write an post, linking to another post on your site. You get something like: David Kennedy mentioned this Article on davidakennedy.com

#
barnabywalters
(not forgetting class=“p-name u-url” on the <a> element)
#
tantek
barnabywalters: already implied
#
tantek
so no need
#
tantek
we should encourage simple microformats markup to be kept as simple and minimal as possible
#
Loqi
fo sho
#
KevinMarks_
oh, I added those
#
KevinMarks_
I should omit?
krendil joined the channel
#
barnabywalters
well, the name will be the contents of the entire <h3> so will include the date too — if that’s intended, then they can be left implied
#
tantek
IMO yes - as a teaching tool - you should omit
#
Loqi
definitely
#
tantek
barnabywalters: I think having the date in the name makes a lot of sense for this usage
#
barnabywalters
Loqi is apparently quite passionate about implied microformats
#
Loqi
yeah!
#
tantek
since he posts these notes every two weeks
ShaneHudson joined the channel
#
barnabywalters
Loqi: steady on
#
KevinMarks_
otherwise they're all the same name
#
barnabywalters
yeah, good idea to leave it in then
#
tantek
barnabywalters: I'm also tempted to start documenting singular <time> child elements as well, towards a possible implied dt-published
#
tantek
i.e. .h-entry > time:only-of-type
#
barnabywalters
from zero to h-feed in 51 characters/1 element + 2 attributes
#
tantek
the 1 element (<time>) should have been there anyway per HTML5
#
tantek
so it's really only 2 class attributes
#
tantek
and if we implied dt-published from a singular <time> element inside an h-*, then that would be back to only 1 class attribute
#
barnabywalters
tantek: agreed — I’ve been wondering if similar implied parsing could be done deriving the name from the first <hX> element too
#
KevinMarks_
I have undated ones, will that confuse you Barnaby?
#
barnabywalters
you could potentially mark up this entire summary h-entry with one class attribute
#
barnabywalters
even if the date was separate from the name
#
tantek
barnabywalters: ooh - name from hx:first-of-type could be very interesting
#
barnabywalters
KevinMarks_: if they’re h-entries with no datetime whatsoever (which is a bit weird) then shrewdness will just assume they were published the first time it sees them
#
tantek
would need to see examples documented of that however, since in this case, the entire h-entry is on the <h3>
#
KevinMarks_
well, I could add dates
#
tantek
makes sense, like log entries
#
KevinMarks_
though Code and Personality should be 1998
#
barnabywalters
tantek: yeah I was meaning to build a tool which would go over my archive and compare the results of existing p-name parsing with how it would work if there was no explicit p-name but hx:first-of-type was in place
#
barnabywalters
TOO MANY THINGS TO DO
#
KevinMarks_
makes month-oly dats as I'm lazy
#
barnabywalters
hm, not sure how PHP’s datetime parsing will interpret that — possibly as week numbers or day numbers
#
barnabywalters
nope, looks like it treats XXXX-XX as year-month by default
#
KevinMarks_
it assumes I meant september 1st
#
tantek
KevinMarks: month only dates are cool IMO
#
KevinMarks_
though for the bare year one it picks today's date for the rest of it

#
KevinMarks_
now it works and I'm subscribed twice
#
KevinMarks_

#
barnabywalters
working on that now :)
#
KevinMarks_
and after subscribing I need to refresh the page to see the new entries
#
barnabywalters
KevinMarks_: can you raise an issue for that (and any other bugs/annoyances not yet filed)? https://github.com/barnabywalters/shrewdness
#
tantek
KevinMarks: on my home page h-feed, inside each h-entry I use <a class="u-author" href="/"></a>
#
tantek
which should result in an "author" property on each h-entry of "http://tantek.com/"
#
tantek
do you at least see that?
#
tantek
then I figured we could discuss what/how an h-entry consuming application (like a /reader) could treat an "author" property that is a URL.

s/deciding
#
KevinMarks_
oops, now it broke
#
tantek
I wonder if /authorship for a page with a feed should check the page itself for a representative h-card

#
KevinMarks_
seems like a common case
#
tantek
if so we should be able to document real world examples
#
KevinMarks_
is mine working because I put hfeed on <body>, so the hcard is inside it?
#
tantek
barnabywalters: right now per 5.2 of http://indiewebcamp.com/authorship#Determining that <a class="u-author" href="/"></a> inside each h-entry should cause shrewdnesss to look-up my top level h-card on tantek.com which has url==uid==homepage and an icon and use that.

aaronpk, I showed off our IRC logs to my pal Paul Hammond who works at Slack last night and he was suitably impressed.

#
tantek

is now tempted to have his nickname add an _ for logarithmic idle time.
#
tantek
_ = idle 1 min, __ idle 10 min, ___ idle 100 min, ____ idle 1 day etc.
#
bret
the recent updates to the irc logs are really sweet
#
bret
love the images
#
tantek
bret - so where's yours? ;)
#
bret
haha!
#
bret
i noticed that
#
tantek
was waiting for that :D
#
bret
how do I set it? h-card on my own site?
#
tantek
bret - we're not quite there yet. see and edit /irc-people
#
tantek
aaronpk - I suggest an avatar for Loqi that has PNG transparency rather than the light blue background.
#
Loqi
grins profusely
#
tantek
see? he really wants that !
#
bret

mko: JonPincus left you a message 2 weeks, 6 days ago: i've been doing some stuff in node, and leveraging your indieauth module despite its early state ... are you going to be at HWC tomorrow in SF? would love to discuss
#
mko
Wow. Has it really been almost 3 weeks since I last had IRC on?

ohhh mko you doing indieauth stuff in node?
#
mko
bret: Yeah. I wrote a Passport.js Strategy for IndieAuth when I did my rewrite of https://mowens.com -- it's available on NPM at https://www.npmjs.org/package/passport-indieauth
#

tantek: that's awesome re: Slack
#
bret
mko does it act as a token endpoint by any chance?
#
mko
Not currently, no.
#
mko
I haven't done token endpoint integration yet. I had to disconnect and stop feature-creeping in order to get my portfolio revised before I had company visiting the last few weeks.

bret: there's caching on the people list
#
bret

#
bret

#
bret

#
aaronpk
just the irc log page caches the people list for 5 minutes

Thanks. Testing some stuff still, and the Favorite/Bookmark are definitely not finished.
#
mko
And really Reply/Repost aren't finished either.
#
tantek
mko - still, awesome as it is, definitely add it to http://indiewebcamp.com/webactions#IndieWeb_Examples with a screenshot of even what you have today - looks really good!
#
mko
Tons of incomplete stuff right now that's just at a base level of implementation.
#
bret
yeah mko Looks great!
#
mko
Thanks. Documentation of what I've got done is still somewhat low on my list right now as I'm cleaning things up before I start applying to new jobs and really promoting myself again. There'll be tons of documentation coming over the next few weeks.
#
mko
Oops. kylewm: your site doesn't work with my IndieAuth implementation for some reason.
#
mko
It's crashing on your relMe data.

No worries. I haven't thoroughly tested the IndieAuth implementation yet with that many other homepages.
