GWG
tantek: I thought about staying for part of LibrePlanet
#
dougmckown
Where do I put <link rel="me" href="https://twitter.com/dougmckown" /> ?
#
GWG
It should be href="" rel="me">
#
dougmckown
Okay. I copied that from an indiewebcamp.com article.
#
dougmckown
So it should be: <link href="https://twitter.com/dougmckown" rel="me" />
#
kylewm
the order of the attributes shouldn't matter
#
kylewm
right GWG?

#
dougmckown
@kylewm: that's what I thought
#
dougmckown
Which wordpress file shoudl I place that line of code?
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
kylewm
ideally it should be the <head> of your document, I defer to GWG on the WP way to do that
mdik_ and wolftune joined the channel
#
kylewm
dougmckown, you can also use visible links (<a rel="me" href="https://twitter.com/...">) in the body
#
dougmckown
So, if it's just a standard link in the menu, that counts?
#
GWG
I usually put it in the header. But Not in the head
#
GWG
dougmckown: That is where I put it
#
dougmckown
Which PHP file creates the header?
#
dougmckown
I thought the Indieauth plugin did this for me.
#
GWG
There is an old plugin, indieauth links
#
GWG
Dougmckown, if you want to hack it in, it is the header file in your theme.

#
dougmckown
gRegor`: I'd move away from WP if there was another indieweb-enabled blogging platform that didn't require a command line. Any suggestions?
#
aaronpk
Known? :D
#
gRegor`
Known is a great option, though I don't have experience installing it on my own server.
#
dougmckown
It's a joy to use, but there is no ability to add static pages.
#
dougmckown
Not with the .org version, anyway.
#
aaronpk
ah yeah that was a major limitation that caseorganic was considering as well
#
gRegor`
Depending what indieweb-enabled features you mean, ProcessWire is a solid choice IMO. I'm in the process of migrating my site to ProcessWire and writing a webmention plugin for it.
#
dougmckown
My main IW feature is tweet-cloning to my site along with the ability to pull in twitter replies and favorites to my sites. On WP, I use Twitter Tools and Social by MailChimp.
#
gRegor`
Ah. I use webmention + brid.gy for twitter replies
#
dougmckown
But brid.gy doesn't clone tweets to my site.
#
dougmckown
To get full IW functionality, WP requires over a dozen plugins.
#
dougmckown
Has anyone here had any luck with adding IW features to a Squarespace site?
wolftune joined the channel
#
dougmckown
gregor: does Processwire have any IW features now?
#
gRegor`
Why not publish notes on your site first and syndicate to Twitter?
#
GWG
dougmckown: why not just use SemPress?
#
GWG
dougmckown: We're working on the dozen plugins
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
dougmckown
gregor: because syndicating a post that's under 140 characters still pushes a URL to twitter, and because I haven't found a way to syndicate *just* the post and not the title to twitter. I've tried dozens of twitter syndication tools. They all have these problems.
#
dougmckown
gregor: to solve these problems, I have decided to push tweets (and replies) to WP instead. That means that I have a non-silo version and replies.
#
gRegor`
dougmckown: brid.gy supports publishing to twitter sans linkback. I do it regularly. https://www.brid.gy/about#omit-link
#
gRegor`
If your notes are marked up with mf2, bridgy should properly pull in the text. You can use the interactive publish mode to paste in your link and see a preview of the tweet to be sent.
#
kylewm
dougmckown: is it true Known doesn't support static pages even with this plugin? https://github.com/idno/StaticPages
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
dougmckown
gregor: thanks, I did know that was an option. I thought brid.gy was just for pulling replies, favorites, likes, etc.
#
gRegor`
Oh, yeah. Bridgy publish is pretty awesome.
#
gRegor`
Let us know if you run into any problems with it.
#
dougmckown
kylewm: thanks, I didn't known about that plugin. I'll try it.
#
dougmckown
gregor: that plugin might push me back to Known, from WP. It would be nice that have IW features out of the box.
#
dougmckown
GWG: what does sempress give me in IW teerms?
#
dougmckown
gregor: another reason to push tweets is becasue it's easier to share a link via twitter than with WP when on a mobile device.
#
tantek
GWG, I decided to not stay for librething
#
GWG
dougmckown: It is an mf2 marked up theme
#
GWG

#
dougmckown
Does mf1 mean that I can't have h-card and h-entry
#
dougmckown
gregor`: okay. didn't know that
#
GWG
dougmckown: mf1 is vcard and hentry
#
gRegor`
dougmckown: I am working on a webmention plugin for ProcessWire. It's "close" but I've been really busy. Hopefully I can launch a beta within a month.
#
GWG
dougmckown: It's just the earlier standard.
#
kylewm
I think it's fair to say ProcessWire would be a lot more DIY than Known or Wordpress
#
dougmckown
gregor`: does it have any IW features now?
#
gRegor`
I don't think ProcessWire has any microformats-enabled themes currently, so it would require editing templates to set it up.
#
dougmckown
kylewm: crap. I'm looking for less DIY than WP, not more.
#
gRegor`
Yeah, like kylewm said, it's definitely not a 1:1 comparison with WordPress.
#
GWG
dougmckown: The truth is, there will be less DIY for WordPress in the futue.
#
GWG
dougmckown: We're not there yet
#
GWG
dougmckown: Always looking for help on that
#
gRegor`
dougmckown: Do you know PHP?
#
dougmckown
gregor`: no, but PHP is in my lynda.com queue
#
gRegor`
You can install ProcessWire with the blog profile (included in the download) as easily as WordPress, IMO. http://modules.processwire.com/modules/blog-profile/ From there it depends what indieweb functionality you want.
#
dougmckown
GWG: I'm happy to help out. I can test plugins. I am a former software tester.
#
gRegor`
First customization you'd probably want to add is microformats to the template. If you're comfortable with editing HTML, that's not too bad.
#
GWG
dougmckown: Most themes can get a basic mf2 by just added h-card where there is vcard, h-entry where there is hentry, etc. There are some other issues with the mf1 standard as implemented on WordPress
#
GWG
dougmckown: Feel free to test anything I develop.
#
GWG
dougmckown: I have a starter theme that uses MF2, as well as a few plugins I'm developing to make things easier.
#
dougmckown
GWG: Which PHP file gest an h-card entry?
#
dougmckown
GWG: h-entry would be per-post, correct? Or can that be enabled just once for all posts?
#
GWG
dougmckown: If you edit a theme, you should be able to find it in the theme, and then it would be on all posts. Remember, the theme is a template applied to all posts.
#
dougmckown
gregor`: I am comfortable with HTML, but am not sure whare to put the h-card and h-entry code.
#
dougmckown
GWG: where would I find your plugins to test?
#
gRegor`
dougmckown: GWG is your man for WordPress help on themes. :)
#

acegiak: GWG left you a message 1 day, 11 hours ago: The new version of Post Kinds is out
#
acegiak
oh neat!
#
acegiak
So I'm wondering if maybe something like amazon cloud services is a nice flexible entry point
#
acegiak
rather than saying "ok, now drop $150 on a 3 year hosting contract"
#
GWG
I've been doing lowend hosting
#
acegiak
as in you're hosting for people?
#
GWG
As in I host my test site on a $12/year server
#
kylewm
acegiak: do you mean like, you'd admin a server to share between multiple people?
#
kylewm
tilde.club style
#
acegiak
kylewm, no my site is currently hosted on a machine I run in my house, but I don't trust myself enough to host other people's sites
#
acegiak
GWG: who is that through?
#
kylewm
AWS is pretty expensive for that use-case
#
acegiak
I just liked the flexibility
#
acegiak
cause the problem I had was that I was using a paid host and then I started using too much processing time and they got shitty so I had to go through the hassle of migrating to my own server
#
GWG
I just look on here
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: acegiak: are these technical people who want to do their own sysadmin, etc? if not, this all sounds too low level
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: maybe something more like hosted known
#
acegiak
yeah hosted known is top of my list
#
acegiak
cause yeah, these are totally non-technical people
#
acegiak
well, not totally non-technical
#
acegiak
digital natives
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: ok. still, AWS is for engineers/ops people. I'd never recommend anyone else use any AWS product, except maybe outliers like mechanical turk
#
acegiak
that makes sense
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: recommend them something fully hosted
#
acegiak
yeah. it's just a matter of finding the price point/flexibility
#
acegiak
doesn't help that our dollar is so awful against the US at the moment
#
acegiak
Australia is learning a hard lesson about electing a government whose platform is racism and austerity measures
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: ugh
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: there are plenty of free hosted options. e.g. known, but you can also make blogger, tumblr, and <http://wordpress.com|wordpress.com> pretty indieweb
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: even sending and receiving webmentions, with bridgy
#

#

#
benwerd
happy to answer any questions :)
#
acegiak
oh hey!
#
acegiak
also: Did you see the post about the weird dream I had about you guys?
#
Loqi
slack/snarfed: eh. owning data isn't necessarily about owning the server, hosting, etc. you're always at some point on the spectrum. your own domain is the main part
#
acegiak
yeah, that makes sense
#
acegiak
benwerd: does known have a reader/aggregator of any kind yet?
#
benwerd
acegiak: we've written a bunch of code for one, but it's not something anyone can use yet
#
benwerd
That wasn't a dream
#
benwerd
We were genuinely just faffing in the library.
#
acegiak
is your reader going to support RSS/atom as well as mf2?
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#

Also, I'm assuming to run extra plugins one needs to migrate off onto a private server?
#
benwerd
We actually do have the ability to run custom plugins on our infrastructure on a per-site basis
#
benwerd
But for obvious reasons we have to be careful about it - they've got to be approved, and it's generally a paid thing
#
acegiak
that's the kind of flexibility I was curious about
#
hmans
benwerd, what's the technology stack for Known? Node?
#
benwerd
Actually, no: LAMP, where the M is optionally MySQL or MongoDB
#
acegiak
awesome
#
hmans
benwerd, optionally? Can I choose one, or can it even run without any database?
#
benwerd
It's PHP 5.4+ and some plugins, with some use of Apache mod_rewrite rules (but people have got it working with nginx etc)
#
benwerd
It needs a database
#
benwerd
The database layer is abstracted - MySQL support is one file - so I definitely welcome open source flat file contributions
#
benwerd
(Flat files could just be another database plugin to the system)

re databases, I've been enjoying PostgreSQL a lot lately. Best of both worlds from RDBMS and document databases (with the latest JSONB stuff.)
#
benwerd
PHP is soooo much better than it used to be. I genuinely enjoy writing it.
#
hmans
benwerd, I need to check it out eventually; I've been hearing that a lot.
#
hmans
My last PHP was from 2005 or so.
#
benwerd
Oh, man. Yeah, it's a different world.
#
benwerd
Real OOP, namespaces and clojures, for me, made an enormous difference.
#
hmans
Done pretty much nothing but Ruby since then, and often I feel it sort of ruined me for all other languages.
#
hmans
It kind of bugs me since there's heaps of interesting stuff going on in other languages right now.
#
hmans
I'm kind of hoping that a couple of years from now, container based hosting will be just as omnipresent as simple LAMP stack web space type hosting, so we can go crazy with all sorts of obscure technology stacks without losing users. I'd love to build something with OpenResty (nginx + Lua, it's crazy fast and very hackable)
#
benwerd
I second this. LAMP was a practical decision because it could be installed almost anywhere. It'd be cool to be able to mix and match to make the best possible machine.

That's one of my major gripes with PHP as a platform (not language)... in the end, it's still mostly about scripting Apache workers instead of thinking in terms of having long-running application processes. Granted, this is what makes it easy to deploy. Hm.

looks like there are three categories of folks who are posting indieweb content vs. silo content
#
tantek
1) ownyourdata - 100% of posts (e.g. at least of one post type) they post on their own site first, then POSSE to a silo, e.g. notes to Twitter

#

3) sharecropper - none of their posts (of at least one post type) they post to their own site first, but instead always post to silos first, e.g. Twitter
#

wondering how to document this, because it shows how committed they are to their own website and to an independent web. i.e. if you're not living it (or at least trying to, even partially), you don't really believe in it.

own your data is one of the principles of the IndieWeb and is an encouragement to always post content directly to your own domain with permalinks that you control instead of posting to silos (or only posting copies of your posts to silos per POSSE, and if so, preferably both automatically & with permashortlinks back to your original posts) https://indiewebcamp.com/ownyourdata

I am ownsomedata on notes, because sometimes Twitter app is just quicker to post something.

The majority of those I do manually copy back to my site later.
#
tantek
ownsomedata is when an indieweb site user/owner only posts some of their content (perhaps of a certain type) on their own domain first, then POSSEs it to silos, and instead posts some or most content on silos first.

The iPad Twitter app has a "copy URL of Tweet" option, but the Android Twitter app does not - when you go to copy on Android it adds some text like "Check out @username's tweet: URL"
#

So it's difficult on my phone to reply to a tweet from my own site.

Morning, ben.
#
gRegor`
At IWC there was an app/server thingy for replying to Tweets from Android, I think?
#
gRegor`
Hmm
#
ben_thatmustbeme
twitter app doesn't even have a share button, on "Copy link to tweet"
#
ben_thatmustbeme
which is annoying, but I can manage it
#
gRegor`
The app added a custom "Share to..." option
#
gRegor`
It annoys me that "Copy link to tweet" isn't *just* the link.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
it is for me
#
ben_thatmustbeme
i can reply to tweets from mobilepub, just copy link to tweet and past in to reply-to field in mobilepub
#
gRegor`
Hm. Actually, I only have "Copy to clipboard" under Share to
#
gRegor`
Where is "Copy link to tweet"?
#
ben_thatmustbeme
i want to get a custom share activity, but haven't done that yet. and twitter doesn't support it :(
#
gRegor`
Oh geez. Found it.
#
gRegor`
"Copy link to tweet" is in the context menu from the top right, *not* under the "Share" icon. That's odd.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
ohhh, there it is
#
gRegor`
This will help me immensely. Thank you!
#
gRegor`
I thought it seemed like a pretty big oversight on Twitter's part to have it in one app but not the other.
#
ben_thatmustbeme
oh yeah, i remember why i stopped looking at that for the time being... phonegap build doesn't support the plugin for it yet, so I could make it work for myself but I had wanted to use the build service to make in available for iOS

So... "To override the default behavior, just add a filter to comment_text with a lower priority (so that it's called after this one) or remove the filter completely in your code: remove_filter('comment_text', array('SemanticLinkbacksPlugin', 'comment_text_add_cite'), 11);
