#
snarfed
ah interesting. that's probably been there for a while
#
aaronpk
i can't tell from the logs at what point it decided to stop checking my home page though
#
snarfed
i may have inadvertently upgraded a dependency, i'll investigate
#
aaronpk
the lines where it didn't discover any links don't have a permalink to the log file
modem and KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
snarfed
aaronpk: looking at those logs, it's using http://aaronparecki.com/replies , and the permalinks there are indeed https
#
snarfed
unintentional?
#
aaronpk
oh! funny...
#
aaronpk
you have two feeds for me though right? my home page and replies?
#
snarfed
it discovers feeds dynamically each time
#
snarfed
so i'd go by what the log says
#
snarfed
looks like it uses / and /replies
#
aaronpk
i can't tell how to find that in the logs. the latest twitter poll at the very bottom says "skipping refetch h-feed" so I don't know where else to go from there
#
aaronpk
the rest of https://www.brid.gy/twitter/aaronpk doesn't link to any logs since all the "recent responses" have no post links found
#
snarfed
oh, sorry, i was just looking at the very top, the two "rel-feed" lines
#
snarfed
ah yeah ignore response logs, those are just for sending webmentions
#
snarfed
the poll logs are all that matter here
#
aaronpk
you're talking about the thing where I click "polled 3 minutes ago"?
#
aaronpk
yeah that one says "skipping refetch h-feed"
#
snarfed
so let's see. it definitely sees everything on /replies. those will probably work if you switch the permalinks to http
#
snarfed
(or show the syndication links in the feed, but up to you of course)
#
aaronpk
i still don't see where you're seeing this in the logs
#
snarfed
same log you sent me. it sees every permalink on /replies, tries to fetch them, and ssl fails
#
aaronpk
huh, now i have no idea how i got to that one, cause it's not the one linked from the last poll
#
snarfed
you probably clicked the "Last poll" link at the top, like i mentioned
#
snarfed
we poll every ~15m but only fetch h-feeds every ~2h
#
snarfed
looks like the same thing with the permalinks on /. it's seeing them and trying to fetch them, but they're all ssl too
#
aaronpk
oh, so sometimes the last poll won't include the h-feed fetch info?
#
snarfed
yes. it only logs what it does in that poll
#
aaronpk
gotcha
#

in reviewing the conversation about Bridgy being liberal about sending backfeed webmentions - Intuitively I keep leaning more and more toward snarfed's reasoning and choices.
#
tantek
Two reasons I can think of so far - it's a great way to bootstrap people onto handling backfeeds, by getting more of them (than they otherwise might), they feel more engaged more quickly
#
tantek
(that was one)
#
tantek
Secondly, if/when anyone gets to the point where "hey I'm getting too many false positives" - that's good incentive for them to start developing their own more precise backfeed implementation for their site / software / project
#
tantek
independent of Bridgy that is
#
tantek
It's good to keep up that kind of pressure to get off of a centralized bootstrapping proxy service

The real reason Google renamed itself to Alphabet: to sort before Apple and Amazon.
#
tantek
looks like first implicitly pointed out by https://twitter.com/twdonovan/status/630846381616431104
#

Alphabet, Apple, Amazon... Facebook should just change their name to "Aaaaa"

uh oh, another ind(.ie) vs indieweb confusion
#
aaronpk
wonder if they're going to stop calling the first version "alpha" because of the association with google :P
#
tantek
so this is like the worst time to do a press release if you're not Google
#
gRegorLove
Aaaaa would be appropriate for FB, since I make that sound there often.

ttepasse_: tantek left you a message on 6/8 at 5:02pm: still trying to understand what you *do* want users to do, rather than *do not*. E.g. do you want users to link to your posts? If so, do you have preferred link text you'd like them to use? Are you ok with short quotations but not long? Etc. http://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2015-06-08/line/1433808123111

writing is the act of creating, adding & editing content for, and updating a primarily text post such as a [[note]] or especially an [[article]]. The challenges of how to best write and post were most recently discussed at an [[IndieWebCamp]] in [[2015/Cambridge|Cambridge in 2015]] in the session [[2015/Cambridge/thoughtpost|Thought Draft Post]].
