aaronpk: you set up you own mail server, e.g. postfix?
#
aaronpk
yeah, i have a postfix server that i only use to forward mail to my gmail address
#
aaronpk
pretty sure i'm going to move everything over to dreamhost's mail forwarding and turn that off
#
aaronpk
i used to do fancier things with it like piping emails to shell scripts, but now things like mailgun make that a lot nicer
#
[number5]
if you have allow incoming smtp on your server, and spammer find your smtp server, they can send you spam
#
aaronpk
yeah, which is why now i'm doubting everything i know and wondering how is email forwarding supposed to be safe

I'm thinking about tagging and wondering if anyone uses "machine tag" style, like Flickr did/does, e.g. upcoming:event=##### which upcoming.org used to pull in pictures of specific events. I was thinking of using a variation, with just a namespace, for tagging concerts. artist:[artist-name]
#
aaronpk
at that point why not just URL tagging?
#
gRegorLove
What is URL tagging?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "URL tagging" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/106x
#
gRegorLove
Do you mean linking to the artist URL?
#
aaronpk
or your own URLs
#
gRegorLove
Hm. Guess I'd prefer my own URL over the artists, since so many are just FB, Bandcamp, etc. URLs
#
aaronpk
i don't know, i hadn't really thought about it either way
#
gRegorLove
I hadn't thought about it that way. Implicitly each tag would have it's own URL once I add browse-by-tags.
#
gRegorLove
So I guess the question becomes whether I actually *need* to add context to the tag so it's clear it's an artist and not something else random.
#
gRegorLove
E.g. is my tag 'mew' about the band or cats? :)
#
aaronpk
yeah, i haven't quite figured that out either yet. right now with person-tagging, the only thing that differetiates that from something else like venue-tagging is the contents of the URL
#
aaronpk
(tho even then, both would contain an h-card, so that's still a little confusing)
#
gRegorLove
Do you do URL tagging?
#
aaronpk
yeah, but it assumes any tag that is a URL is a person
#
aaronpk
i show it with a little person icon
#
gRegorLove
URL tagging is /tags
#
loqi.me
created /URL_tagging (+17) "prompted by gRegorLove https://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2015-11-12/line/1447392878259 and dfn added by gRegorLove"

#
aaronpk
i'm pretty sure i'm going to make a web service for p3k that returns a simple representation of any URL, looking for microformats, oembed, twitter tags, facebook tags, etc
#
aaronpk
and that's what i'll use for showing reply context
#
aaronpk
i might add that to webmention.io since it's already doing some of that work for pulling out data for showing comments

voxpelli: cool, we should make the APIs return in the same format!
#
voxpelli
aaronpk: I was thinking of mainly making an embed script, similar to my comment embed
#
voxpelli
but my latest embed script uses my API to progressively enhance a "u-responses" link so would likely do somehting similar then
#
voxpelli
have a script that reads the reply to comment, asks the API about the content of that (due to Salmentions it will have to have fetched it anyway), and then embeds a representation of it
#
aaronpk
ah yeah that makes sense
#
voxpelli
s/reply to a comment/the reply link in the post/
#
aaronpk
it's funny cause there is a service that does pretty much this http://embed.ly/cards
#
voxpelli
yeah, we used them at Flattr, I got them to parse some more microformats back then :)
#
aaronpk
oh really!
#
aaronpk
do you still have contacts there? we shoudl talk to them again about parsing microformats2 posts
#
aaronpk
it looks like they're in Boston, I wonder if rhiaro could meet them :)
#
voxpelli
I guess I could try
#
voxpelli
I also built an OEmbed module for Drupal that made it very easy to add all Embed.ly OEmbed endpoints
#
cweiske
.. use a service to use a service
#
cweiske
what do you save with it? the discovery stage?
#
aaronpk
lol no that's just a library to use a service. i was actually thinking about using embed.ly as a last resort fallback in my service tho ;)
jciv joined the channel
#
voxpelli
cweiske: embed.ly provides oembed endpoints for services that themselves doesn't provide an oembed endpoint if that's what you mean – they basically have an oembed-api that you can use with any URL, although some they support better than others
#
cweiske
ah, ok
#
aaronpk
huh yeah everything i was thinking about building with this service it seems that embed.ly has done it
#
voxpelli
one can find the services they provide extended support for with http://api.embed.ly/v1/api/services
#
aaronpk
i wish it was open source so that i could just run a copy
#
voxpelli
including regexp that one can use to match against URL to know when embed.ly can provide an improved experience and when one can maybe want to do a fallback oneself rather than have embed.ly handle the fallback
#
voxpelli
aaronpk: there are eg. https://iframely.com/
#
aaronpk
haha that's a great tagline "It’s the embeds API you wish you built yourself."
#
Loqi
awesome
#
kylewm
gRegorLove: events should show up in woodwind, but it doesnt' have any special support for them above and beyond regular poss
#
aaronpk
well then... maybe i can submit a PR to them for mf2 support
#
aaronpk
thx for this link voxpelli :)
#
ben_thatmustbeme
what is embed.ly?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "embed.ly" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/106y
#
voxpelli
I guess I should add a second step to the metadataparser that I've created so that it not only parses a lot of data, but also derives a unified representation of all that data

#
aaronpk

I'm so not happy that iframes are making a comeback
#

#
ben_thatmustbeme

if you two converge the webmention responses on jf2 that would be very cool
#

[kevinmarks]: I already updated webmention.io to return jf2 if requested
#
kevinmarks
I know - if you can replace the js sent down now to client side by jf2 to the same effect that is a good field test
