GWG, manual until it hurts
#
tantek
just being able to person-tag photos and have at least some of those person-tags make it to the POSSE FB copy feels somewhat magical and that's worth the manual work (for now)
#
tantek
there's also the value of having a working live public example to show 1) that it is possible, 2) how to make it work
gRegorLove joined the channel
#
GWG
I do a lot of manual posting. But not at text level.
#
tantek
3) there's also the value of experimenting with the presentation details of photos and person-tags in public
#

and as you know, since good presentation is hard, it is worth experimenting and documenting results to improve presentation, even incrementally

#
GWG
tantek, I'm back redoing my presentation because I don't like how I did it. It's a learning experience, but if I'd done it better before...
#
tantek
"if I'd done it better before..." is unlikely
#
tantek
you do it better by doing *something* then by iterating
#
tantek
postponing doing because you want to do better usually results in nothing
#
GWG
tantek, how about, if I'd thought about it more earlier on,I might have done better? I would never postpone indefinitely

#
KevinMarks_
could you update autolink for person-tagging, or is the need to have a data lookup limiting?
#
GWG
aaronpk, you use Dropbox?
#
aaronpk
I have been moving off of it. At this point I only use it for sharing files with other people.
#
tantek
kevinmarks - yes that's part of my thinking, per this entire section: https://indiewebcamp.com/person-tag#Plain_text_authoring
#
tantek
I brainstormed / designed a bunch like that in advance before I started coding, and I've coded merely a fraction of it so far, to see what feels necessary next
#
aaronpk
My own syncing and backups are handled through a server I have at home now.
#
KevinMarks_
hm, could #@kevinmarks expand using the rel-me on twitter?
#
tantek
KevinMarks: it could - if the rel-me was confirmed bidirectional
#
KevinMarks_
thats in effect what I do implicitly in noterlive, though I don't check backlinks
#
tantek
I concluded a separate function, auto_person_tag would be better than extending auto_link
obensource joined the channel
#
tantek
but before I automate all the things, I want to keep working more manually, and tweaking / iterating presentation, details etc.
#
tantek
and as they gel, start to automate the pieces that seem more solid

the way I implemented person-tags - it will let me do more manual experiments with other post features more quickly in the future

GWG
snarfed, if you set a post to reply, it will display some context and can even do so automatically. I'm iterating on that and would love feedback
tvn joined the channel
#
snarfed
GWG: cool! so it fetches the original post, stores its content in the db, and renders based on that?
#
bear
tantek - yes, that is a bengo npm module
#
snarfed
and i'm guessing you have to use post kinds' authoring to trigger that? ie i
#
snarfed
...ie it wouldn't happen if i include a raw <a class="u-in-reply-to" ...> in HTML?
#
GWG
snarfed, stores metadata on it after parsing. Not the raw.
#
snarfed
cool. as long as it fetches once and stores what it needs to render
#
GWG
And yes, but it is a function that can be triggered.
#
snarfed
interesting, ok
#
snarfed
how about likes, reposts, rsvps? any plans to add reply contexts to those?
#
GWG
Right now, it is tied to a button in the post ui
#
GWG
snarfed, same code.
#
GWG
But needs iterating
#
snarfed
so all four of those types get reply contexts right now?
#
GWG
Yes, primitive ones, but I am trying to rework them this week
#
snarfed
great! i may try it. maybe consider adding all this to the readme and docs on the wordpress plugin directory too. :P
#

But there are some in the plugin page on wordpress.org
#

#
GWG

#
GWG
I know it can be better
#
snarfed
aww thanks! we value your contributions!
#

#
snarfed
did you ever try pfefferle's reply context plugin?
#
GWG
snarfed, long time ago. I looked at it for ideas
#
GWG
snarfed: Check out my site or acegiak's. Both use the plugin. Although I admit acegiak surprises me in her usage sometimes
#
snarfed
GWG: will do!
#
snarfed
the biggest factor on my end will be authoring flow. i currently use https://snarfed.org/indieweb-press-this-bookmarklets-for-wordpress , which generates raw HTML (in the custom Press This UI, not the admin UI), so i'd ideally like that to Just Work without doing anything extra

#
GWG
snarfed: I keep trying to make my workflow easier.
#
KevinMarks_
bookmarklets are trickier now becaus of over-eager browser blocking of js
#
GWG
The parsing code I wrote, I changed it to work over WordPress's ajax handling.
#
GWG
So technically, all you have to do is send a URL to the handler and it will return the parsed fields in JSON

#
GWG
My goal is to have the following workflow
#
GWG
Read article on phone -> share using Android intent -> automatic post generation.
#
GWG
The Android part isn't going to be coming any time soon.
#
GWG
Unless maybe someone writes a micropub client
#
GWG
Post Kinds does support Micropub, but that also needs improvement.

snarfed: Did you ever check out the refactoring I was working on with that?
#
snarfed
i haven't looked at that commit yet, just the rest of the PR before it: https://github.com/snarfed/wordpress-micropub/pull/20#issuecomment-150829844
#
GWG
Yes, not done. I forgot I still had a PR open and it added it to that
#
GWG
I didn't branch
#
snarfed
refactoring is great! this one is big, though, which is always scary, so i think we probably want tests beforehand to convince ourselves it doesn't break anything

GWG
snarfed: I wanted to refactor because it would make the tests easier to write.
#
snarfed
got it! so then we just need the actual tests :P
#
snarfed
also, your ideal flow is how i currently reply/like/repost, with bookmarklet free and indieweb press this.
#
snarfed
(i know bookmarklet free hasn't worked for you before, but there are other similar apps)
#
KevinMarks_
it's hard to get an excerpt and a link through an android intent
#
GWG
I'll see
#
GWG
snarfed: I'm getting there.
#
GWG
KevinMarks_: I just need the link. My code gets the excerpt.
#
snarfed
KevinMarks_: not true!
#
GWG
snarfed: But with the micropub changes, your original architecture was not as flexible as stringing the post generation code onto the hooks you created.
#
snarfed
many big apps send both text snippet and link
#
KevinMarks_
I should check again; when I looked before a lot would send one or the other
#
snarfed
right, probably that too. it's on the apps though; intents themselves support big and structured data

Interesting note: Facebook has started differentiating between native and syndicated posts in its notification text. Now says "___ commented on your activity" rather than status / photos / etc

I always wonder how syndicated vs. native impacts your priority in their algorith,
#
benwerd
I think they're definitely promoting native harder than they were

but it's part of a mix of factors, as always

so sara is on tumblr - can she use a Quill/silopub combo to get what she wants there?

oh yeah I'm getting the "so and so commented on your activity" from facebook now
#
snarfed
benwerd et al have been looking at the medium api, and there's a known tumblr plugin, so that might be closest
#
benwerd
Possibly. The thing people use Medium for is, in our research, audience more than the UI - they think it gives them higher reach (and it may do), and the built-in stats really help with that
#
@tinokremer
@SaraJChipps in fact, I'm using my domain as a consolidated #indieweb home. I still blog too :)

Also, I think rounding on someone who dismisses blogging is probably not a great way to spread the word, and I regret retweeting Sara's original tweet

#

The facebook permalink URL problem refers to the issue that POSSE implementations may face, where it is difficult to guess a post permalink URL based on the ID that Facebook returns. The other direction is even more difficult (or impossible), IDs cannot be guessed based on a post URL.
#
kylewm
I keep doing that wrong

Yeah, I'd go so far as to say that the hardest problem in indieweb isn't design or microformats or API tech; it's exceeding the discovery and promotion experiences of the silos

app-scoped ID is an identifier given to a post or other silo entity that is only relevant within a particular app. It is useful for preventing apps from leaking private information to each other, but makes some aspects of POSSE and backfeed exceedingly difficult.
