not weird! it's correct behavior - if a character is not present in a font, CSS has font fallback rules

miklb
hey gang, what would be the best way to test if I'm **sending** a webmention?
#
miklb
from my blog that is
#
aaronpk
hmm, would it be appropriate for bridgy to un-truncate URLs in posts? e.g. https://brid-gy.appspot.com/post/twitter/aaronpk/687417200991408133
#
aaronpk
miklb: you want something that can receive webmentions that you can test with?
#
miklb
aaronpk: ideally, yes. But now I'm not sure my workflow is set up properly. I think the rakefile I'm using is meant to send them on build. so not sure if this will work the way I'm doing it currently.
#
tantek

#

#

#

#
aaronpk
okay i'm pretty confused. how do bridgy RTs work?
#
aaronpk
i'm looking at two bridgy URLs which have a different tweet ID, but they both appear identical other than that:
#
aaronpk
i'm gonna try a different post in case this is just a fluke
#
miklb
beginner question…I just include the the link in a post?
#
aaronpk
miklb: for a simple test yes!
#
miklb
ie, [Kartic had some intersting thoughts](url here)?
#
miklb
cool, thanks.
#
aaronpk
later you can upgrade that to an <a href="..." class="in-reply-to"> link if it's a reply
#
aaronpk
(okay so that was in fact just a fluke. tried with a different post and everything looks great.)
#
KartikPrabhu
miklb: and you can resend the webmention if you add the rel=in-repy-to and my post will update the old one :)
#

#
KartikPrabhu
no i don't have to wait for anything. I thought you did send and there was some error on my end
#
aaronpk
gonna let my import script run for a while and then spot-check things in the morning to see how it did
#
aaronpk
when I do this for real it's gonna take several hours to import everything over!
#
KartikPrabhu
that is some major importing
#
miklb
KartikPrabhu: no, it would be completely on me. I'm probably doing it wrong trying to use travis ci & builds, but I've muddle through this far :-)
#
miklb
KartikPrabhu: yeah, seems I may need to think this through more probably. Might need to ask Aaron Gustafson a few Q's.
#
KartikPrabhu
just adding a link didn't work?
#
miklb
no, but again, probably in the way I'm building the site with travis & then deploying to GitHub
#
miklb
it builds clean, but doesn't mean everything is working
#
KartikPrabhu
you can use the form I have on that post to see if the problem is really on your sending side
#

hmm. Give me a few minutes. Going to try this from scratch. Thanks for your help
#
miklb
KartikPrabhu: must be something on my end, since the form didn't work either.

#

#

#

sorry about that; the recent update to my site broke a little part
#
miklb
heh, I know that all too well
#
snarfed
http://mention-tech.appspot.com/ is a generic webmention receiver, right?
#
snarfed
poorly documented, granted :P
#
KartikPrabhu
miklb: try sending it now. my form works so you can first try your side of the code
#
KartikPrabhu
miklb: your h-card does not have a p-name so a very long text should appear instead of your name in my "Mentions" list
#
miklb
KartikPrabhu: thanks, I see it, it was a typo. Had a closing </a> instead of a </span>
#
miklb
will be fixed in next deploy
#
miklb
actually, will be fixed in the test
#
miklb
KartikPrabhu: doesn't appear that it sent through my build :-(
#
miklb
will test the form now
#
miklb
OK, form seems to have worked, says "webmention accepted"
#
miklb
doesn't have the text from the post though. Was it supposed to?
#
miklb
something is breaking my HTML in the build process on my h-card. Investigating.
#
KartikPrabhu
miklb: since it is not a "reply" I don't show the HTML text
#
miklb
ah. OK
#
KartikPrabhu
I can confirm that the e-content was received correctly in my storage :)
#
KartikPrabhu
once you add the class="in-reply-to" it will show the text
#
miklb
actually, the h-card should be correct. I think web inspector was showing it wrong. If I view raw source, it matches as it should

#
miklb

#
KartikPrabhu
interesting it showed up only as mention
#
KartikPrabhu
I'll look at it too and see if somethign else is wrong
#
KartikPrabhu
oh! miklb it needs a "u-in-reply-to" not just a "in-reply-to"
#
KartikPrabhu
u meaning it should be parsed as a URL microformat
#
miklb
OK, that explains that part.
#
KartikPrabhu
i should have seen this before... my bad
#
Loqi
I agree
#
KartikPrabhu
break a leg Loqi
#
miklb
well, that will help me test it tomorrow, as I can fix that after I look into why the build is passing but not sending. Hoping it's just a matter of where the cache path is in the script
#
miklb
Thanks again. I must say, finding this community has rekindled my faith in the web. Reminds me of when I first starting doing this 11 years ago.
#
KartikPrabhu
miklb: another thing to look at it that maybe the webmention is automatically sent on a post publish but not a post update.
#
KartikPrabhu
so the first webmention failed due to my server error and the update didn't send any webmention

that's possible, now that I'm looking at the plugin's .yml file

I suppose I won't have this rate limiting problem when I do the import from the real server since it has all the bridgy HTML fetched already

Hi, who is creating the new HWC pages in the wiki? There was always a commented out address for Gothenburg so I wouldn't have to rewrite everything everytime, now it is gone, can I somehow get it back in?
#

Jeena: tantek left you a message 1 day, 19 hours ago: do you know when the first Göteborg HWC was? And how many were held last year? Can you edit https://indiewebcamp.com/2015-review#Homebrew_Website_Club with that info? http://indiewebcamp.com/irc/2016-01-19/line/1453238089670

not sure the HTTP code, but instead of HTML from bridgy I got a JSON document that said the rate limit was exceeded

hrm, sorry, not a great experience
#
snarfed
(fortunately the rate limiting is per user at least)
#
aaronpk
yeah, not sure what a good solution is
#
aaronpk
I think this won't actually be a problem though, I hit it because I was importing comments on my local site which doesn't have all the bridgy HTML cached already
#
snarfed
yeah i know
#
snarfed
low priority
#

at least html instead of json would be nice, but not too bad if it at least returned the right content-type

i'm gonna have to rsync all my files from my server in order to keep testing the import process

aaronpk: Experienced similar rate limit issues early on when developing FrancisCMS. I modified my import/verification scripts to delay for one second on each iteration and that seemed to avoid the rate limit issues.
