#
GWG
Indiemark Level 1, as well as what newcomers are encouraged to do first at Indiewebcamps if they have an existing site.
#
KartikPrabhu
IMO because it encourages a couple of basic things 1. have a site/domain 2. put at least a simple h-card on it 3. connect it to your other silo profiles 4. log on to wiki to contribute
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: 2. rel-me doesn't require h-card.
#
GWG
1, 3, and 4 I concede. But that was what I was asking about.
#
KartikPrabhu
that was not in ranked order
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: I know.
#
KartikPrabhu
nothing about rel-me or indieauth requires 2. so
#
KartikPrabhu
if you concede 1,3,4 then your question is answered, no?
#
kylewm
KartikPrabhu: you cannot post bookmarks from woodwind at this time
#
GWG
The reason I am asking, is that I'd put h-card before rel-me because if you don't, what are you rel-meing if your page isn't representing you?
#
KartikPrabhu
i have lot of "bookmarked" posts in feedly to read/refer to later
#
kylewm
tantek: maybe some day, but it's not on the top of my list
#
kylewm
KartikPrabhu: Im not sure how you'd post tags from woodwind, just as hashtags in the content textarea maybe?
#
KartikPrabhu
GWG: posting an h-card does not have any immediate visible benefit to newcomers
#
KartikPrabhu
kylewm: yes. I could improve my backend to recognise them
#
KartikPrabhu
GWG: also you are rel-me-ing your domain name to link to silo profile.
todrobbins joined the channel
#
KartikPrabhu
kylewm: I was thinking of switching to an indiereader with bookmarks living on my own site
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: Having a properly marked up h-card no. But having your site have content identifying you seems useful.
#
KartikPrabhu
for what?
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: Human visitors?
#
KartikPrabhu
it is useful later when you put content etc... for getting started maybe not so much
#
KartikPrabhu
so it can be intro step 2
j12t joined the channel
#
GWG
I think it is the difference between having an existing site, and starting from scratch.
#
tantek
GWG, how about /h-card#Why ? does that answer your question?
#
KartikPrabhu
even if you have an existing site, putting rel-me gives immediate benefit of logging into wiki
#
KartikPrabhu
next step can be h-card
#
tantek
right
#
tantek
it's also a handy way to replace Gravatar dependency with your own site
#
tantek
kylewm: really hope you maintain Woodwind, as it was essential to the IndieWeb passing SWAT0: https://indiewebcamp.com/SWAT0#mapping_to_indieweb
#
tantek
we don't have any other new combinations of people or sites or tools passing SWAT0 in the six months since
snarfed1 joined the channel
#
tantek
(the silo SWAT0 was/is a special case obv since it bends the steps a bit to be "silo-compat")
#
snarfed1
tantek: do you just mean that some actors participate using silo accounts rather than indieweb sites?
#
snarfed1
or something more?
#
GWG
I just tended to think about it in terms of usefulness to a human visiting your site.
#
GWG
I prioritize who I am over where I am.
#
KartikPrabhu
GWG: I thought your question was about "steps to get started on indieweb" not "steps to start a website"
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: What does the Getting Started assume? You have one or you don't?
#
KartikPrabhu
either one
#
KartikPrabhu
Getting Started is for "getting started on the indieweb" regardless of whether you already have a website or not
#
GWG
But I'm saying creating content indicating the page is yours has a higher priority if you don't have a website. If you do have a website, then marking it up is a lower priority.
#
KartikPrabhu
no. if you don't have a website then the point is to "motivate the benefits of being indieweb" like being able to log in using your own website
#
tantek
snarfed1 - I think for silo SWAT0 we made some special allowances
#
tantek
KartikPrabhu++ is right
#
Loqi
KartikPrabhu has 129 karma
#
gRegorLove
I think the ability to buy a domain, set up a minimal index.html with rel-me, and being able to sign into multiple services is a pretty impressive intro to the indieweb. Bonus: it gets you a step closer to using more indieweb things like Micropub or Telegraph
#
tantek
note that Telegraph does consume your h-card
#
gRegorLove
Oh, didn't realize that.
#
KartikPrabhu
tantek: but is it necessary?
#
tantek
point is, rel=me gets you IndieAuth, which is useful for editing the wiki, using Monocle, Woodwind
#
tantek
and filling out your h-card is like filling out your Gravatar that you control on your own site - and is used by Telegraph and other services
#
tantek
KartikPrabhu: "is it necessary" is not a useful question
#
tantek
everything has a "why"
#
tantek
you have to decide for yourself whether that "why" is necessary or fun or good enough or supercool etc. to *you*
#
tantek
"necessary" is artificially narrow and unproductive framing in a community context

#
KartikPrabhu
what is microformats?
#

microformats are extensions to HTML for marking up people, organizations, events, locations, blog posts, products, reviews, resumes, recipes etc https://indiewebcamp.com/microformats

maybe Loqi is throttling me
#

#

#
aaronpk
because the $_SERVER variable isn't always available
#
tantek

#
aaronpk

#
tantek
where are these documented?

#

looks like $HTTP_SERVER_VARS was removed in 5.4

I don't have a whole lot of posts or comments to deal with - maybe I could just manually create pages for them and webmention myself?
#

would they have the correct timestamps if I did that?
#

Oh hey, that’s my post. (Hi everyone. I’ve been lurking here for a while, but very excited about what everyone is doing. I’m working on a Twitter-like service and publishing platform that works with RSS and indie microblogs.)

aaronpk: Hi!
#
aaronpk
I am curious about your JSON API!

aaronpk: So, don’t share this URL yet because it’s not quite announced, but for anyone here you can see more about what I’m trying to do here: http://snippets.today/about (invite code “indiewebcamp” if you want to play around with it)

#
aaronpk

#
[manton]
For the API, long-term I may switch to other standards for what I recommend people use, and have my simple JSON just used internally. Not sure yet. http://snippets.today/api
#
aaronpk
"I already have my own microblog." what would it take for you to parse an h-entry feed in addition to RSS?
#
[manton]
Great question. Not much, probably. I’d love to support that.
singpolyma joined the channel
#
[manton]
I’ll admit I’ve been slow to adopt h-entry and related microformats myself, so it’s on my radar but not something I’ve tried to parse yet.
#
aaronpk
this looks neat
#
aaronpk
(the verification email took a long time to arrive)
#
[manton]
Thanks! (Yeah, I’m sending email through Mailchimp’s Mandrill and I think they had some server problems this week… Hopefully it clears up.)
#
aaronpk
nicely done with the paid upgrade to add microblog hosting
#
aaronpk
why do the entries on your profile not have permalinks?
#
aaronpk
and the favorite/reply buttons aren't there too
#
aaronpk
oh I see, they have permalinks and reply/favorite if i'm viewing my home timeline
#
[manton]
Just haven’t gotten to it. The main timeline has permalinks on the date. Just need to add that everywhere. (I’ll make a note to fix that… Keep forgetting.)
KartikPrabhu joined the channel
#
aaronpk
another suggestion: add the posting interface to the top of the main timeline
#
[manton]
Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely room for improvement there.
#
aaronpk
sorry I'll stop :P
#
aaronpk
I know this isn't done yet
#
[manton]
No, it’s great. Happy to hear any feedback.
lewisnyman joined the channel
#
aaronpk
so another thing you can do with the post interface is if I don't have a hosted blog, you could suggest that I connect a micropub server to it
#
aaronpk
and then I could actually use your post interface to post to my own server!
#
aaronpk
that would work with the like / reply buttons too!
#
[manton]
Definitely, I’d love to do that.
#
[manton]
Along those lines, I have a native iPhone app that can post to a self-hosted WordPress or Movable Type blog. I want to support Micropub there too.
#
aaronpk
and that means it would be tied to the iOS app and then I could use your iOS app to post to my site! \o/
#
[manton]
Exactly. That is my goal, because I think there’s value in having the timeline and posting UI in the same app (i.e. learn from what Twitter did well in terms of user experience).
#
aaronpk
okay one more simple suggestion for now, on the hosted blogs you provide people, mark them up with h-entry so that I can follow peoples' snippets.xyz blogs in other readers!
wolftune and TheDavidJohnson joined the channel
#
aaronpk
oh and you have a very straightforward path to using webmention with the reply function when you are hosting the reply on the site
#
[manton]
Will do, thanks. I need to give the templates a fresh look with microformats in mind. They started basically as Jekyll defaults.
#
KartikPrabhu
[manton]: looks pretty neat. is there a microblog running on snippets that I can look at
#
KartikPrabhu
curious about UI/presentation etc...
#
aaronpk
here's a really easy version of adding microformats markup to the template: https://gist.github.com/aaronpk/17b9be3ee891ac845d42
#
[manton]
aaronpk: Thanks, that’s helpful. One thing I wasn’t sure about is if I could count on something that’s equivalent to RSS’s permalinks/GUIDs, since I use that to track things.
#
aaronpk
you can publish a u-uid value of whatever you want or make it the same as the URL of the post
#
[manton]
I see. I was thinking about parsing, though, if someone wanted to point to their h-entry-compatible site instead of using RSS. But again, just haven’t looked closely at this yet… I will.
#
aaronpk
oh gotcha, yeah normally we de-dupe on either uid if present, otherwise URL
#
[manton]
Ah… Yeah, if u-url is there, that should be good enough most of the time. Cool.
#
aaronpk
yeah and if there isn't a url, you can't interact with it anyway, so you can just ignore it
#
[manton]
Good point.
#
aaronpk
(interact meaning sending webmentions to it, etc)
