so I hacked together a way to make a channel in Monocle public

the incoming webmentions or feed pings would generate an event stream on the backend

so people could consume it however they wanted

Hey. Posting from my site to Twitter is pretty fun. I should’ve wired this up years ago. :stuck_out_tongue:
#
miklb
[shaners]: what platform do you use for your site?
#
[shaners]
One that I built myself (with my bff in crime @bookis) called Dark Matter Publisher
#
aaronpk
[shaners]: i'm really curious what you have in mind for the square version of the new logo
#
[shaners]
It’s still *very* rough. But it’s improving every day and is working for me so far.
#
[shaners]
I don’t yet
#
[shaners]
I’d have to go through the process
#
[shaners]
Logos don’t come outta nowhere. You gotta do the work. (It’d be nice if they were perfect on the first try though!)
#
aaronpk
I just can't even picture how to make it work when it's square
#
[shaners]
Me neither.
#
[shaners]
But we already don’t have a *real* square version. So, we’re no worse off than before.
#
aaronpk
yeah totally
#
aaronpk
i was hoping you had some magic up your sleeve to solve the square logo right now :P
#
[shaners]
After I finish this batch of specs for DM, I’ll dig into your/kevinmarks C ideas.
#
aaronpk
👍
#
[shaners]
I’m not gonna dig into square and full treatment until the group is like, yeah that’s our new jam.
#
aaronpk
so far the response is pretty positive
#
[shaners]
Pretty much.
#
[shaners]
But no one’s pulled the trigger yet.

Maybe no one feels like they’re allowed to swap it out on the wiki bc they’re not admin or something.
#
aaronpk
well there isn't really a particular person that can "pull the trigger"
#
aaronpk
not sure if you saw but people are commenting here: http://indiewebcamp.com/logo#Discussion
#
aaronpk
so anyone should feel free to chime in
#
[shaners]
Totes. How many +1s do you think we should wait for?
#
[shaners]
Or for how long in time?
#
aaronpk
i'd say let's give it another week?
#
[shaners]
sounds grood

is a square version mainly for a shortcut-icon?
#
aaronpk
and favicon
#
[shaners]
twitter avatar, facebook page profile photo, etc,
#
aaronpk
and syndication icons
#
aaronpk
the rectangle one works okay on twitter/facebook since those show it pretty big, but any time it's displayed small there needs to be a more appropriate one
#
[shaners]
though the fb/tw could better use the space of their square
#
[shaners]
but yeah, they’re not terrible
#
aaronpk
yeah they'd definitely benefit from a better square one
#
[shaners]
Ok. Some specs done for now. Time to sketch on logo’s C.
#
aaronpk
has plans to make an SVG font with a bunch of icons we typically use in indieweb land
#
aaronpk
common networks we POSSE to, etc
#
[shaners]
Have you seen the open web icons font?
#
aaronpk
yeah but it doesn't have the indiewebcamp logo
#
aaronpk
just kidding, it does :P
#
[shaners]
Womp womp.
#
[shaners]
Now you get to cross that off your list without doing any work!
#
aaronpk
oh yeah he added the webmention icon too
#
miklb
what is open web icons font?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "open web icons font" yet. Would you like to create it? https://indiewebcamp.com/s/10Cz
#
aaronpk
well i still have to make my own icon font but at least i don't have to include all these

miklb
thanks, just googled it
#
aaronpk
somehow i doubt he'd like it if i sent a PR to add runkeeper/secret/geoloqi/disqus logos :P
#
[shaners]
HA! Prolly not.
#
aaronpk
that's more what i had in mind with the indieweb icon font
#
[shaners]
What’re your feelings about SVG vs web font?
#
aaronpk
i don't have those kinds of feelings
#
bear

#
Loqi
aaronpk has 69 karma
#
[shaners]
I only barely have those feelings. And it mostly comes from the fact that I used Ghostery to block *a lot* of things. Including webfonts.
#
[shaners]
Makes my web browsing way more fastererer.
#
[shaners]
I wonder what kevinmarks means by “+0” on /logo. Is that like a sideward thumb in consensus style?
#
aaronpk
it's slightly more positive than a 0
#
[shaners]
aaronpk: do you have crystal’s original authoring files (psd, ai, etc) from the current logo?
#
aaronpk
i have a .ai file
#
aaronpk
the SVG version is linked from the wiki
#
[shaners]
I think we should make a repo in gh/indieweb with these things
#
[shaners]
I usually call it branding or collateral
#
[shaners]
branding is prolly better understood

[kevinmarks]
In standards stuff, -1 means block this. 0 means don't block it, and +0 means mostly ok with reservations
#
[kevinmarks]
Is an ai file richer than an SVG?
#
aaronpk
yeah you can put all sorts of things in an .ai file
#
[shaners]
masks and layers and stuff
#
[kevinmarks]
You can in an SVG too. I suppose it depends on tooling.
#
[shaners]
but you wouldn’t want the extra weight in the final .svg that you’re using on the web
#
aaronpk
ai can do multiple artboards now too
#
aaronpk
woohoo my icon font is working

I wonder if I drop an image into Slack if the bridge will bring the URL across to IRC...
#
aaronpk
let's find out?
#
KartikPrabhu
for icons on a website I would suggest using SVG instead of icon font. The advantage being that if the icon does not load for some reason SVG will just be blank but fonts will display some incorrect thing or an unreadable Unicode thing
#
aaronpk
i'm guessing it will, but that it will also only be visible if you're signed in to slack in your browser
#
[shaners]
Looks like not.
#
aaronpk
oh that top one is definitely a C!
#
[shaners]
Which, you’re right aaronpk, requires Slack auth.

#
[shaners]
Oh I see.
#
[shaners]
And it kinda looks like a racecar drive / astronaut helmet.
#
[shaners]
aaronpk: where do i make a file public?
#
[shaners]
I found it
#
aaronpk
the little ... that appears over the image oh
#
[shaners]
The top one in that image is more like a C. Actually, kinda like that Cubs logo that kylewm dropped into the channel the other day.
#
[shaners]
kevinmarks: do you have feelings about any of these?
