good evening #indieweb
#
GWG
Hello, tantek_
#
tantek_
funwhilelost, keithjgrant, martymcguire, miklb - yeah I think in context, it is easy to read ChrisAldrich's post as (admittedly unintentional) mansplaining
#
tantek_
I think the terseness was frankly the polite response ;)
#
miklb
agreed. Could easily have said bugger off.
#

has anyone done anything with likes on WordPress comments?
#
GWG
miklb: You mean locally? Or via webmention?
#
miklb
well, locally, but sending a webmention for the like would be ideal.
#
GWG
I thought about local likes akin to local comments.
#
GWG
But Semantic Linkbacks supports receiving likes via webmentions.
#
miklb
maybe I'm thinking of something for webmenton comments. Scenario - you write a in-reply-to to a post I've written. I "like" your comment on my site, and it sends back a like of that in-reply-to. If a native comment, someone could "like" that comment natively as well.
#
miklb
more thinking aloud I guess.

#
GWG
singpolyma, I have a Trac ticket open about the fact that you have to declare support for trackbacks to get Pingbacks, also counterintuitive.
#
singpolyma
[chrisaldrich]: on Wordpress with the plugin, normally yes
#
singpolyma
GWG: I mean, they're all considered the same thing. The average Wordpress user doesn't know the names of the tech, they just want to be notified when someone links to them

#
GWG
singpolyma, this is at the developer, not the UI level
#
singpolyma
Right. I mean, it seems odd to support one and not the other, since they're the same at the UI level
#
GWG
singpolyma, I don't think Trackbacks can be saved and they are weighing down Pingbacks by association
#
singpolyma
GWG: Shhh! Are we allowed to admit anything but Webmention exists in here? ;)
#

I think being able to selectively disable Trackbacks would make people more willing to consider the benefits of Webmentions... some of which apply to Pingbacks
cweiske joined the channel
#
singpolyma
You know that all the benefits of Webmentions can be applied to any of the other protocols, right? The main-cited "benefit" being checking if they link to you to prevent spam... which you can do no matter what protocol submitted the information to your system. At the bottom they're all just super-light protocols that send a source, dest URL pair to you in some format
#
singpolyma
what you do with that pair is up to you
#
GWG
singpolyma, I've laid out some of my Core WordPress thoughts in recent posts on my site
#
GWG
singpolyma, I tried to suggest Trackbacks be source verified. It just seems like even if the old protocols could be adapted, it is just too hard to overcome perception of them.
#
singpolyma
yeah. weird
#
GWG
I have come to think it will work better to implement something with less baggage.
#
GWG
Originally, the design of the webmention plugin mimicked Pingback design. I have been trying to submit PRs to move away from it in select areas
#

TIL "micropub chaining" is an existing label. Needs to be linked better in the wiki, hard to find

what is micropub chaining
#
Loqi
micropub chaining is when you have one micropub endpoint itself use micropub to post to another micropub endpoint, like to POSSE a post to silos, or to a community site or other commons https://indieweb.org/micropub_chaining

The term Micropub chaining always seemed more confusing to me than what's actually happening there

martymcguire[m]: from a UI perspective, closest to what you describe I've seen is posting UI that has extra fields for each syndication post content, but I have only seen that on WP sites that used neither bridgy publish nor Micropub

yup, e.g. jetpack and SNAP. also *lots* more UI examples of this outside indieweb, notably in bigger (often commercial) CMSes used by online publishers.
#
martymcguire[m]
sknebel: i've seen that pattern several times myself
#
martymcguire[m]
i have a complication that sometimes my "POSSE" version of a post is more like a teaser with a link back to the post
#
martymcguire[m]
and those can't always be syndicated until the post actually exists at the eventual URL
#
sknebel
martymcguire[m]: as in, you want to include a link to the post at a chosen location in the posse'd post?
#
martymcguire[m]
sknebel: exactly. another case: i sometimes want FB to pick up the info in my post for the link preview
#
aaronpk
In any case, it's usually good/fine to publish the post on your site first and *then* syndicate it, updating your post with the syndication links later
#
aaronpk
nothing about POSSE says you should tweet it first before it's on your site
#
snarfed
that would be PESOS
