Tiki Suite

Created by Marclaporte.com on October 13

Tiki Suite is a selection of Free / Libre / Open Source Software (FLOSS) server, web, mobile and desktop apps with a concerted focus on greater interoperability, security and adaptability, which is aimed at small & medium-sized organizations.

The Tiki Suite is especially suited to decentralized and knowledge-centric organizations and offers most (80%+) of the features all organizations need, such as: Email, Website & Blog, Shopping Cart, Intranet & Project Management, E-learning, Social Networking, Knowledge base, File sharing, Issue Tracker, Video-conferencing, LDAP, VPN, Gateway, Network, etc.

You can install anywhere (home, office, laptop, data center, etc.)

Tiki Suite is built around Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware: A full-featured, Free / Libre / Open Source, all-in-one Wiki+CMS+Groupware. PHP, MySQL, Zend Framework, jQuery, Smarty and Bootstrap.

Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware runs on shared hosting and has pretty much all the features you could ever need for your personal site. As of 2014-10-13, it doesn't have IndieWeb features (h-card, rel-me), but those can be added as built-in (but optional) features. Not those pesky extensions that just break at the next upgrades :-) The Personal Site Profile could be improved to by default support all IndieWeb features.

While Tiki Suite is designed for organizations with 10-50 user accounts or so, nothing prevents you from using it for just one person! Beyond your domain name, you'll want email, calendar, XMPP, etc. There are FLOSS components for just about any feature / tool to manage your own data:

Even if you don't want a full suite (yet or ever!), you should check out the list of awesome components:

The IndieWeb philosophy fits right in with Tiki suite, and thus, has been added a component criteria:

Please get involved with Tiki Suite so it can become an even better tool for anyone to easily manage their own data and join the IndieWeb!

shun

Created by Bear.im on October 17

Shun is a custom module added to the TWiT IRC server to allow a moderator to silence a user to the group but not have any indication of the silence for that user.

Shunning allows the moderators to prevent a troll's output from getting to the main channel but not let them know they have been shunned - from their viewpoint everything is normal.

Being not far from DC, I would be very interested in an IndieWebCamp DC. I don't know that I would be much use as an organizer though, but if there's enough interest maybe we can figure something out. Rascul.io 12:23, 14 October 2014 (PDT)

IndieWebCampProvidence 2015

There seemed to be a fair number of people interested in attending IWC Cambridge but could not make it in to the city. There are a number of locations that would make Providence possible, with several schools that might be suitable location hosts.

Currently I am looking for a co-organizer to help work out details of the event. - Ben Roberts

Location Possibilities

  • AS220 has space downtown Providence, though I don't know if they would really have enough room for us.
  • University of Rhode Island has a Providence Campus building that might be able to host. They also have a web developement track to their CS department and Ben Roberts is an Alum.
  • Brown University is close by to downtown and would certainly have the space to host.
  • RISD is also close by and might be convinced to host.

Snapchat

Created by Tantek.com on October 11

Snapchat is an ephemeral-photo hosting silo where users post photos to their friends, which are viewable for a limited number of seconds, sometimes a few times.

Criticism

Ephemerality Illusion

The 3rd party website SnapSaved.com claimed to save the Snapchat photos you received, which they did but for themselves also. SnapSaved did this by implementing the password-antipattern by asking for your Snapchat password.[1]

And then the site's creators released the photos:

Boxpub is a blog engine written in Python that supports serving a blog out of Dropbox.

https://github.com/sivy/boxpub

Boxpub is (sort-of) actively developed by Steve Ivy (https://github.com/sivy/).

Boxpub supports:

  • templates stored with content in Dropbox
  • supports posts and pages

All content is requested directly from Dropbox on page rendering, therefor is is recommended that a boxpub site be fronted by a caching webserver or content delivery network (CDN).

In the future boxpub may support serving from a filesystem cache.

This makes it an interesting case study for longevity.

Movable type is interesting in the database debate. It uses a database, but renders all pages to static files by default. So sites made with it tend to be less fragile and persist longer

2014/Cambridge/Hack Day Intro

Created by Tantek.com on October 12

IndieWebCamp Cambridge 2014

Day 2 of IndieWebCamp is our hack, create, design, and build day.

General Advice

  1. Still not sure what to hack on? Checkout IndieMark for some next steps for your site.
  2. Find one really simple thing to add to your site before lunch, one more challenging thing after lunch.
  3. Ask for help if you're stuck at all - you are short on time, but surrounded by high-bandwidth expertise. Ask on IRC, ask your neighbors, ask an organizer.
  4. Help someone get unstuck. Listen and if you hear a question about something you know something about, take a few minutes to help someone or direct them to a resource on the wiki.

Hack Sessions

Hack Session Proposals

  1. write down on a sticky note:
    • what you're going to work on
    • your name
    • hashtag
  2. Announce what you're doing
    • pick an area / room / space
    • before/after lunch
    • and put your sticky up on the grid

Join forces with others working on similar things.

Report:

Present: Andrea, Eva, Guiseppo, Michiel, Pierre

Broadcast hour

Things we discussed during the first ("broadcast") hour:

  • what is indieweb
  • what is webmention, posse, bridgy
  • what is an indiereader
  • how can you sort important information on top in your indiereader
  • receiving webmentions doesn't imply you need to also display them publicly
  • people click around on indiewebcamp.com a bit

We present our own websites

  • Michiel:
  * (personal, statics on own server): https://michielbdejong.com/
  • Pierre:
   * (personal, statics on own server): http://pierre-o.fr/
  • Eva:
   * No web, no blog, just email :)
   * we'll get you started tonight! -> evaballestrem.com
  • Andrea:
   * (semantic web/foaf): http://www.autistici.org/bakunin/foaf.rdf
   * (html) http://www.autistici.org/bakunin/
   * (work tumblr) http://143th.net/
   * (sailing tumblr) http://thembi.me/
   * (free books; contributor) http://www.ippolita.net/
  • Giuseppe:
   * (work; wordpress on own server) http://www.spaccaweb.com/
   * (personal; old blog) http://pianeta.altervista.org/

Second hour ("peer-to-peer")

  • Eva + Michiel: Setting up evaballestrem.com and creating first html page (transferring from hand drawing)
  • Giuseppe: Setting up his identity (did not have a *personal* Facebook, Twitter, etc yet)
  • Andrea: Configure authentication system - how to improve indieauth with a browser plugin, email, Mozilla Persona, or something like that
  • Pierre: tried to set up bridgy developer environment, to debug bridgy problem on pierre-o.fr (Pierre's shortener relies on JavaScript, which causes problems)

Dinner and epilogue

At 9pm we walked together from Casa Independente to closeby RDA 69, where we had a nice vegan dinner at the collaborative kitchen, and continued talking about computer science. :)

We had an interesting epliogue discussion when Eva ran into a fellow photographer, who immediately asked her if she had a website. To which she could answer "yes, since two hours". :)

However, since he was using http://cargocollective.com/, he was able to easily publish his photos in a nice way, and it became clear that for Eva to have that same user experience, she needs not only a website, but also a photo gallery tool like http://www.mediagoblin.org/. Having just a website is not enough, because it still requires knowledge of html and ftp.

IndieWeb is really in its "Homebrew" days! :)

Next Homebrew Website Club Lisbon will be in two weeks, on 29 October. We realized we're out of sync with the other HWC chapters, not only by timezone, but also by the biweek-phase on which we got started. :)
