every time i think i understand css, or bootstrap, i quickly realize i don't
#
snarfed
i'm ok with that
#
kevinmarks
bootstrap is a mess
#
kevinmarks
css is a turing complete layout language
#
kevinmarks
bootsrap assumes laying everything out in 1/12th of the width is a good idea
#
kevinmarks
which was vaguely plausible when it was for desktop-only ui for interanl twitter tools, but a bit of a conceptual boat anchor when you're using it for mobile
#
snarfed
sadly in this case i have an existing bootstrap app that i'm just trying to tweak slightly
#
snarfed
and utterly failing
#
kevinmarks
yeah, that's what I feel about noterlive - fred very kindly bootstrapified it for me
#
kevinmarks
but I don't have a good idea how to change things

#
tantek
FWIW a page name to me is not a slug, but rather key to its permalink

#
KartikPrabhu
actually reading back aaronpk's approach to pages makes sense to me! so nvm
#
tantek
I see pages as out of the timestream of posts
#
tantek
and thus out of the date-stamped URL hierarchy
#
KartikPrabhu
yeah basically that is what aaronpk said. posts that don't go into any feed but have a URL anyway
#
tantek
now, edits to such pages could be posts
#
tantek
in particular, /edit posts :)
#
KartikPrabhu
what is edit?
#
Loqi
An edit (AKA diff, change) is a special type of reply that indicates a set of suggested changes to the post it is replying to. A collection of (presumably related) suggested edits in open source is often called a patch or pull request https://indiewebcamp.com/edit

petermolnar: didn't WordPress become bloated years ago?
#
voxpelli
was ages since it was the go to tool for me for a simple small little blog
#
petermolnar
though I have a 'theme' which reduces a significant amout of the bloat
#
voxpelli
I went to Jekyll and custom code instead :P
#
petermolnar
I'm still finding the WP admin part useful
#
voxpelli
And Drupal – because Drupal while also being complex is also pretty robust so one actually gets something back from it
#
petermolnar
but I'm getting a bit tired of keeping it clean
#
voxpelli
The new admin should be Quill and the likes ;)
#
petermolnar
Drupal, no. Not for me. It's ridiculously heaving on the server
#
voxpelli
not so sure I would say that Drupal is necessarily more heavy than WordPress – one can optimize Drupal pretty heavily and make it use good cache systems
#
voxpelli
and also make it do very optimized queries
#
voxpelli
even NoSQL based ones
#
voxpelli
it is targeted at bigger sites than a blog though

#
[shaners]
Tantek: the use case is “should a page be able display a link or reply context to something else?"
#

I’m leaning toward yes
#
tantek
aaronpk - still a bit plumbing-ish: "is a page rather than a post"

#
aaronpk
yeah that's my point ;)
#
tantek
shaners, still plumbingish - a link or reply context to something else is a side-effect
#
tantek
what's the actual use-case you're trying to solve?
#
tantek
as a *user*
#
tantek
not as a programmer
#
tantek
what a page can or cannot do is not a user-centric use-case, that's anthropomorphizing a feature
#
tantek
what task is the user (you) trying to accomplish?
#
[shaners]
Here’s an example. It’s a page on my site, that I made inspired by my friend’s similar page. (They’re both pages out of timestream.) But *as a user*, I’m not sure if I want to show an in-reply-to link.
#
[shaners]
I’m not asking your opinion as a plumber or programmer. I’m asking you as a user, what do you think? Do you ever want to show reply-context or an in-reply-to link on a Page that you’ve made?

davidpeach: How are you tracking your Google Play listens?
e-lima joined the channel
#
davidpeach
hi gRegorLove. I save the URL in my site admin then ive got a scraper that scrapes the 'public facing' version of the album screen that none-members can view, and grab the title, artist, artwork.
#
davidpeach
then for each time submit my listen form in admin, i then add to a listen_count table with timestamps. So got album saved once, then each entry in counts to track individual listen dates
#
davidpeach
i will be sharing the code for it - just need to tidy a package nicely :)
#
gRegorLove
Oh, so you're manually posting when you're listening?
#
davidpeach
per album, not song
#
