Spacebar (formerly Fosscord) is a free and open source, full stack reverse engineering and reimplementation of the Discord server, and some indieweb community members have experience with it.

It's a communication platform you're already familiar with.
In Spacebar you can use existing Discord bots and bridges
Spacebar Clients
To connect to a Spacebar server you need a Spacebar client.
