hi all, I'm about to transfer my domain to godaddy and was reading on the indiewebcamp site the suggestion to avoid private registration. Can anyone here back that stance up, or would godaddy be a case where they can be trusted enough?

demis: GoDaddy is not a case where they can be trusted with anything
#
benwerd
Highly recommend picking another registrar, although that's my subjective opinion
#
benwerd
(I use both Namecheap.com and gandi.net fwiw)
#
benwerd
But this advice: "Only use domain privacy if you fully trust the provider of the service -- disputes about domain name administration or transfers may get tricky if you are not listed as the legal owner of the domain."
#
benwerd
... is sound for *any* registrar.
#
demis
fair enough, good advice thanks. I looked up namecheap before, some people reported having issues, though not so much those hosting themselves which is what I am doing. What's your experience with them been like?

Good morning
#
pfefferle
I am curious to see you json storage in production
#
pfefferle
Are you also switching to file based storage?
xtof and indiewebcamp-vis joined the channel
#
sandeepshetty
pfefferle: yep. the .json will be on disk so no db.
#
sandeepshetty
it was when to installed converspace & had trouble
#
sandeepshetty
with the db that got me to look into file based storage.
#
sandeepshetty
*you installed converspace

#
pfefferle
sandeepshetty: Nice!
#
pfefferle
A had a look at your json schema
#
pfefferle
Are you storing comments separately? Or in the post json?
#
pfefferle
What do you think about a generic lib that transfers mf2 to the storage format and vice versa?
#
pfefferle
...and encapsulates disc writing/reading
#
sandeepshetty
planning on storing comments with the post.
#
pfefferle
Wouldn't it be easier to store them in a sub directory?
#
pfefferle
Easier to update or delete
#
sandeepshetty
depends on what you mean by easier :)
#
pfefferle
You don't have to read the whole json stack
#
pfefferle
What do you think about a dba like lib?
#
pfefferle
Would love to help you with that
#
pfefferle
Could need something very similar
#
sandeepshetty
I'll be writing a lib to encapsulate locking & atomic writes
#
pfefferle
As part of converspace or separately?
#
sandeepshetty
will pull it out and make it part of github.com/phpish
#
pfefferle
Ah ok that's the micro mvc you use?
#
sandeepshetty
re comments in different files: it's easier to make writes atomic when it's one file than making multi file writes atomic
#
sandeepshetty
would love to get help and ideas.
#
pfefferle
Yea! Let me know if you have something to look at...
#
sandeepshetty
I have to first move to a host that supports a persistent file system :)
#
sandeepshetty
I'm currently hosting sandeep.io at AppFog and they don't have a persistent file system yet (it's been their priority for ages now)
#
pfefferle
No stress... In the meantime I have enough todo with reply context in the webmention plugin :)
#
sandeepshetty
and all the other PaaSs are to expensive do well have to move to a vps
#
pfefferle
That sounds like work
#
pfefferle
A lot of configuring stuff
#
sandeepshetty
yeah, a PaaS would been convenient but I don't have a choice :)

turns out there is a way to see which twitter users have retweeted/favourited a given tweet — e.g. https://twitter.com/i/activity/retweeted_popup?id=353546206921756675

barnabywalters: it appears as an item on your dashboard
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: okay — hm, not sure if that counts as a notification
#
barnabywalters
is there a fb/g+ style notifications thing which shows you how many you have queued up?
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: it's not like that, it's more that there's a full page newsfeed
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: I just signed up recently to see what the UI was like
#
tommorris
it has posts from your friends, your own posts and notifications about posts.
#
barnabywalters
I like the way the only actions you can take on content are passive props or actively creating new content out of it
#
tommorris
some of the massive nested quote-threads aren't exactly "creating new content", more "arguing like annoying children" ;)
#
barnabywalters
well, that’s bound to happen everywhere :)
#
barnabywalters
specifically I’m interested in the difference between usage of retweets and “equivalents” on other silos
#
barnabywalters
turns out they’re barely equivalent at all
#
tommorris
so, I've been having fun with my OSM venues database
#
tommorris
I will soon have all of Britain
#
tommorris
I did London. then I did all of Scotland and Wales
#
barnabywalters
wait, you have all the venues?
#
barnabywalters
like, *all* of them?
#
tommorris
I had to rent an EC2 instance to do massive data wrangling, but I'll soon have all of the UK
#
tommorris
or all of GB rather
#
barnabywalters
how do you handle new ones being added?
#
tommorris
that's something I'll deal with soon
#
tommorris
still experimenting
#
tommorris
fiddle the lat/long and count to get data near you

#
tommorris
I can load Iceland in later if you like ;)
#
barnabywalters
tommorris: that would be cool :)
#
tommorris
I'm also documenting the process of importing. it's pretty easy, if RAM-intesnive
#
barnabywalters
hm, that is nice and fast. are you using mongo for this?
#
barnabywalters
or postgis?
#
tommorris
yep, Mongo and using MongoLab for hosting
#
tommorris
I've got 105k venues in there and it's about 30Mb of so of data
#
tommorris
MongoLab free tier is up to 0.5Gb
#
tommorris
the Mongo isn't the hard bit. it's that while calculating centroid, you need to have all the relevant nodes in memory
#
tommorris
so I'm using Redis on a big Amazon box
#
tommorris
barnabywalters: data for Iceland loading in from laptop ;)
#
tommorris
England data is large enough that it needs an Amazon box for processing, but Iceland data is pretty small.
#
tommorris
319Mb of XML
#
barnabywalters
I was playing with some tfl london underground data recently — I ended up inadventently unzipping over 1GB of XML
#
tommorris
I tried loading the XML for Greater London into memory and managed to get my computer to go into start-acting-crazy meltdown mode
#
tommorris
Spotify started randomly pausing and playing, and CloudApp started uploading old screenshots

#

bout the same actually

tommorris
I'm sure the bars aren't quite as well curated ;)
