i've been experimenting with using a strategy pattern to marshall non h-entry content into reply-contexts: http://notenoughneon.com/2016/6/17/2
#
Loqi
[Emma Kuo] getEntry() strategies are a new feature. You can use this to create RSVPs, reply contexts and reposts of non #indieweb content that publishes oembed and opengraph data such as tweets and wordpress blog entries. A few examples where I've used this:

Do you have a personal website?
#
shurcooL
Yes. But parts of it are (very) incomplete, and there's many things I'm not doing yet (like microformats mentioned at http://indiewebify.me/).
#
shurcooL
But other parts are done and really cool (IMO). :P

I kinda like this idea of web sign-in using your domain name (http://indiewebcamp.com/Why_web_sign-in), but I wonder how it deals with a situation if a domain name happens to have more than one user tied to it. Maybe secondary users. This might be a rare situation, and it might not be a good idea, but yeah, I'm just wondering.
#
shurcooL
Right now my mental model for uniquely identifing users is a (Domain string, ID uint64) pair. Where ID = 0 represents no user (not authenticated).
#
shurcooL
E.g., my user on github is (Domain: "github.com", ID: 1924134), on twitter it's (Domain: "twitter.com", ID: 21361484), etc.
#
KartikPrabhu
shurcooL: that situation has not been an issue so far for indieauth
#
shurcooL
so if someone signs up/logs in using a web sign-in, should I think of them as a (Domain "theirdomain.com", ID: 1)?
#
tantek
shurcool - the whole point is to encourage users to own their own domains, so they own/control their URLs etc.
#
tantek
as opposed to being just a user on someone else's system
#
tantek
hence IndieAuth rather than SiloAuth - TwitterAuth, FacebookAuth etc.
#
tantek
it also parallels CORS and same origin in terms of security
#
shurcooL
I understand, but look at my original question, it's about additional/secondary users (a hypothetical situation, possibly a bad idea) on a given domain.
#
tantek
whereas (domain string, separate ID) does not
#
tantek
it's about rejecting that
#
tantek
because it is insecure
#
shurcooL
I _think_ just assuming ID of 1 as their primary id could work, and these secondary users could be id 2, 3, 4, ...
#
tantek
there's no need for such ID
#
tantek
that's the point
#
tantek
you can simplify your mental model thus
#
shurcooL
Right, if the goal is to support only web sign-in, then just domain is enough.
#
KartikPrabhu
shurcooL: is there a specific use case for this extra ID ?
#
shurcooL
For now, I'm seeing how web sign-ins can fit into my current mental model, but maybe I'll want to change/evolve my mental model... it's fun to think about this.
#
shurcooL
Well, right now it's a way to uniquely identify (existing) users on any site (like facebook, twitter, github).
#
shurcooL
but thinking of a user as just a domain name is a really neat and simple idea.
#
shurcooL
Is there a difference between IndieAuth and RelMeAuth?
#
shurcooL
tantek: you said "parallels CORS", that makes me think of ports. in theory, there could be different ports. example.com:443 might be different from example.com:1234.
#
tantek
shurcooL: yes I believe systems do that by treating http and https differently for now
#
tantek
(as separate logins)
#
tantek
though I could see systems in the future only allowing https
#
shurcooL
Could someone login from same domain but different ports? Hehe. These are just questions/ideas coming to my head... I have a lot of learning to do, so maybe there are obvious answers to them
#
gRegorLove
IndieAuth is an implementation of RelMeAuth
#
shurcooL
Gotcha, thanks.
#
gRegorLove
Though honestly I always get a bit confused about that when It hink about it, heh
#
tantek
shurcooL: yes see above re http and https - those are different ports
#
shurcooL
Right.
#
KartikPrabhu
shurcooL: in the spirit of keeping it simple, I would not bother with something unless it had a goos use-case
#
shurcooL
So my site currently supports signing in via github only (for posting comments and adding reactions), and I want to consider single sign-in in the future. And maybe there'll be ways to let people post comments in a way that they still own those comments (rather than me owning them). But I'm gonna take time to think more about these things and learn more, I've only just found out IndieWeb is a thing today hehe.
#
gRegorLove
honk honk
#
gRegorLove
(goose use-case)
#
KartikPrabhu
gRegorLove: it is pretty late here, cut me some slacks ;)
#
gRegorLove
shurcooL: Aye, there's a lot to take in. The way a lot of us are doing comments is posting them on our own site, then sending webmentions to the original URL. They can then parse the microformats in our posts to show the comment on their site.
#
gRegorLove
What is webmention?
#
Loqi
Webmention is a simple way to notify any URL when you link to it on your site https://indiewebcamp.com/Webmention
#
shurcooL
Speaking of that, is there any chance there's this room but on Slack rather than IRC?

Just the automated things that needs to be tweaked, but those are separate from the Micropub flow itself

miklb: one thing to remember though: The front matter is translated to Micropub parameters, so I don't think all params will survive all the way to the final front matter
#

#
miklb
hmm. OK. I'll experiment.
#
miklb
voxpelli also, how are you? Still busy with work?
#
voxpelli
miklb: becoming less busy with work now that I've stopped freelancing, so starting to have time to do other things :)
#
GWG
voxpelli, if you have a moment, I wanted to pick your brain more on web actions.
#
voxpelli
GWG: sure, go ahead! :)
#
GWG
I had to leave abruptly last time
#
GWG
I was asking about the fact that there isn't a clear alternative if you don't want to wrap your web actions in silo links.
#
voxpelli
Alternative for?
#
GWG
Having the links go somewhere local.
#
GWG
I want... reply on your site or mine.
#
voxpelli
I see, yeah, that isn't something my polyfill handles, but it's certainly doable with the indie-config code
#
GWG
I thought if there isn't an indie config handler..it uses whatever the fallback is in the HTML
#
voxpelli
GWG: by just replacing the content of this if-statement, one can have another fallback: https://github.com/voxpelli/voxpelli.github.com/blob/master/js/webaction.js#L26
#
voxpelli
One do however want to load the indie-config when an action is triggered, else the user might get asked for data too early
#
voxpelli
Compare to how a good native app asks you for permissions, like to send push notifications, when it needs them rather than at the initial startup
#
GWG
voxpelli, I am still confused. If I visit an site with your polyfill and I dont have a registered webaction handler.. What happens?
#
voxpelli
GWG: the fallback I linked to makes it so that the link of the first child a-tag gets used instead
#
voxpelli
Which usually would be a link to eg. a Twitter share
#
GWG
voxpelli, that is what I am contemplating. How can I have a built in option instead of linking to a Twitter share?
#
GWG
Basically, putting a site link in there.
#
voxpelli
GWG: maybe add a link containing a hash? Or fork my polyfill and create a custom js-fallback? (I guess I should make a real repo for those polyfills :P)
#
GWG
I think you are focusing on the plumbing
#
voxpelli
aaronpk: how do one make a repo in the IndieWeb GitHub org? I don't think I'm a member there
#
voxpelli
GWG: well, currently it's a URL-based fallback so as long as you can initialize a self-hosted comment flow through a URL then it works
#
voxpelli
Assuming you want your

#
GWG

#
voxpelli
GWG: that's an interesting question :) A predefined response? An anonymous +1? (Exists at many sites despite it being very easy to game)

That being said, would anyone be up for and or able to get a venue in Hawaii for 2016-12-10..11?

That’ll be a really expensive time to do a thing in .hi.us, bc that’s the “on” season.
#
[shaners]
Flights are more expensiver too
#
[tantek]
How about Dec 17-18 in SF for you shaners?
#
[shaners]
It’s the season bc:
#
[shaners]
- big waves coming south from the Bering Sea, so big wave championship stuff happens on the north shore of oahu.
#
[shaners]
- it’s winter in the northern hemisphere but fucking gorgeous in .hi.us then

Florida is pretty nice that time of year…just sayin' 😉

tantek: I don’t have any 2016-12 plans yet. I don’t have any holiday travels this year either. I am a strong probably to attend then.
#
[tantek]
Miklb are you volunteering to organize in FL?
#
[shaners]
miklb: You wanna put one on then there?
#

Realistically, spring might be better for me. But would love to. Orlando would probably be better, would need to reach out to contacts I have there to score a venue
#
[tantek]
Miklb if you can get a venue say in Orlando, please note that in /Planning#Florida!
#
[shaners]
+1 to IWC FL
#
[tantek]
Whether for Dec 17-18 or 2017 Jan Feb Mar
#
[tantek]
Shaners you know where to add that +1 ;)
#
[shaners]
BUT WHAT IF I DON’T?! Then what? :stuck_out_tongue:
#
[shaners]
Who are the .au contingent? Have we pinged them about a 2017 IWC.au?
#
miklb
OK. I will start looking into a venue in Orlando in earnest for spring. 2/3 2017

It's true. I tend to lack a lot of faith in general. #skeptic

Might be a bit short notice but an IWC SF may be possible then if I (or someone else ahem kylewm benwerd) can secure a venue on short notice!
#
[tantek]
We don't currently have an IWC in July yet
#
[shaners]
That’s shooooort notice.
#
[shaners]
It’s ok if we don’t have one in July.

Everyone can enjoy their respective (northern hemisphere) summers.
