Unmung is a service that turns legacy feeds into h-feeds http://indiewebcamp.com/unmung
#

#
aaronpk
oh hey I guess that was a dream
#
barnabywalters_
aaronpk: you dreamed that we did a thing?
#
aaronpk
definitely had a dream that adactio had tweeted something with the #indieweb hashtag that was getting hundreds of retweets per minute
#
barnabywalters_
aaronpk: that’s hilarious
#
aaronpk
and Loqi was streaming them into IRC
#

aaronpk - hiya - quick Q: I was able to sign into the IndieWebAuth yesterday, but since going SSL today I can't - some kind of certificate chain issue with https://alpower.com ??
#
rascul
alpower1 check your site with https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/ it can be helpful for diagnosing ssl stuff
#
aaronpk
alpower1: let me take a look
#
aaronpk
yeah I just see the generic certificate verify failed
#
alpower1
aaronpk I just get 'There was an SSL error connecting to https://alpower.com' maybe the cert chain?
#
barnabywalters_
aaronpk: pretty sure it’s to do with the same CA cert issue which is preventing other tools from working with Al’s site — default chains don’t have his intermediate cert
#
alpower1
aaronpk https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=alpower.com
#
aaronpk
if ssllabs says everything is ok then I probably need to add whatever root cert yours is signed with
#
ShaneHudson
Yeah I need to fix the intermediate cert problem too
#
barnabywalters_
I’m currently exporting my local firefox certs into a PEM file which can be used with clients which should sort this out
#
aaronpk
for some reason it seems that more people are getting SSL certs from untrusted roots these days
#
rascul
looks like it's startcom
#
ShaneHudson
I got mine from Namecheap
#
rascul
which should aready be trusted because mine works
#
barnabywalters_
aaronpk: not untrusted roots, intermediate certs which are signed by trusted roots but not included in cert bundles
#
barnabywalters_
browsers just fetch and verify them but cURL and similar apparently need them all in the bundle
#
aaronpk
ah
#
GWG
barnabywalters_: I have to remember how to add them in manually.
#
aaronpk
wonder if there's an http client library that supports fetching these intermediate certs automatically
#
alpower1
aaronpk barnabywalters it was from https://www.startssl.com/ - I believe their root cert is https://www.startssl.com/certs/ca.cer however not sure where their intermediary is
#
rascul
alpower1 are you using nginx?
#
alpower1
apache I believe, however handled by my hosting company (web faction)

KartikPrabhu which indieweb tool are you using?
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: you mean my backend?
#
neuro`
KartikPrabhu: yes. Wordpress, known, something else?
#
KartikPrabhu
custom. It is called Bundle
#
KartikPrabhu
what is Bundle?
#
Loqi
Bundle is a set publishing tools for the Indieweb built using Python and Django http://indiewebcamp.com/Bundle
#
neuro`
I was about to ask for a link, thank you :)
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: the code isn't open yet. Have been working on that
#
neuro`
KartikPrabhu: would be cool, and I'm sure you'd get some help to improve it / fix bugs
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: yes possibly. but it has turned out to be quite annoying to make Python packages in some sane way
#
neuro`
KartikPrabhu: I know what you mean, I curse at Pypi about 20 times a day, I ended piping the output of pip freeze into fpm (https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm) to avoid using it
#
neuro`
So I turn every native Python package into a Debian package. No more surprise.
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: I'm not even at the pypi stage. I am unable set github repos as dependencies for setup.py . very annoyign

# dudly joined the channel
#
KartikPrabhu

#

hi
#
KartikPrabhu
i mean a github path with exact version number in the URL
#
KartikPrabhu
hi dudly
#
GWG
Greetings dudly
#
neuro`
Oh. Didn't know that. I leave the dev picking up the requirements, then build and deploy the packages.
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: yes that is what I'm leaning towards. Clone repo -- use requirements.txt to install and so on
#
KartikPrabhu
i don't intend for normal people to use my system anyway
#
neuro`
I once thought I'd be able to get "normal people" to use my system. How stupid of me.
#
@tommorris
@hardaway Seems like a fairly good reason for #indieweb. 😉 (twtr.io/qUmApREFFC)
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: unless you have one-click install and one-click everything, that is not going to happen :P
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: Normal is relative
#
neuro`
KartikPrabhu: we had. For a while, we even tried to clone Wordpress, without the cash and the community. That was stupid. So we (4 people) focused on what we know best: ourselves.
#
KartikPrabhu
when you have web people themselves saying "indieweb is too much work" then I am pretty certain about "normal"
#
GWG
KartikPrabhu: I would like to lower the bar though. I just don't think it needs to be lowered to the floor, so to speak
#
neuro`
KartikPrabhu: I have a draft about how Indieweb is a first world (in terms of cognitive capacities and access to information) thing.
#
neuro`
Definitely agree with you on that one, we have a tremendous work to accomplish.
#
KartikPrabhu
neuro`: I would debate that. So I await your post :)
#
neuro`
That's why self dogfooding is so important.
#
GWG
neuro`: But to what degree?
#
neuro`
Before telling other people what to do, we must do it, show it's possible, and show it's better.
#
neuro`
GWG: knowing what a domain name is, first? That's already being tech savvy.
#
kylewm
neuro`: you mean cognitive surplus not cognitive capacity, right?
#
neuro`
kylewm: yes, thank you, I'm not a native English speaker.
#
GWG
neuro`: I was thinking more some of the programming stuff, not the higher level functionality.
#
neuro`
GWG: that too.
#
KartikPrabhu
GWG: not sure the common user cares about the programming stuff anyway
#
neuro`
GWG: let's start with the highest level part of it. Try explaining normal people domain name is like their postal address, then tell them the difference with their email address
#
neuro`
GWG: then tell them about hosting, just for fun
#
neuro`
Then content publishing tool, etc...
#
neuro`
Today, "normal people" use google instead of typing a URL
#
neuro`
Speaking about it, a perfectly normal people is telling me it's time to sleep. Have a good night.
#
Loqi
laila tov!
#
neuro`
Loqi: I love you too.
#
Loqi
kisses neuro`
#
GWG
I'm thinking...user would like webmentions. User would implement them. User might not want to program them, just install them
#
GWG
What would you say is the technical term to differentiate one who programs a service to one who installs/configures it?
#
@fsteeg
RT @stilkov: This: “POSSE is an acronym/abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere” http://indiewebcamp.com/POSSE (twtr.io/qUnPKgNCZ4)
#
kylewm
GWG: yeah I tend to think it's not useful to jump directly to people who don't know what a URL is
#
kylewm
lots of people who are not professional developers or sysadmins who can follow a non-trivial install procedure
#
GWG
kylewm: I agree with that. I'm thinking 'enthusiasts'.
#
GWG
I wouldn't ask my mother to get involved, for example.

i'm trying to update my SSL, but having problems. I'm wondering if it's because of an old version of nginx
#
GWG
aaronpk: What is the problem?
#
aaronpk
i still have an F because it supports ssl 2
#
aaronpk
i've copied the ssl_protocols and ciphers lines from the wiki
#
rascul
where do you have ssl_protocols defined?
#
aaronpk
in the vhost
#
rascul
check also if you have it defined in the http block
#
rascul
i put it in the http block and only the host specific stuff in the server blocks
#
aaronpk
hm not in the http block
#
rascul
i was curious if maybe you have it defined twice
#
aaronpk
yeah makes sense
#
GWG
Well, what I do is create divide my nginx configuration into individual files.
#
rascul
aaronpk did you remember to restart nginx?
#
aaronpk
reloaded, didnt restart
#
rascul
ok
#
aaronpk
it picked up the new cert, shaaaaaaa is happy now
#

oh crap now its an "almost" https://shaaaaaaaaaaaaa.com/check/aaronparecki.com
#

#

ok *now* shaaaaaaaaa.....com is happy
#
rascul
it all looks fine there
#
rascul
must be something fishy going on
#
aaronpk
maybe my openssl is too old
#
rascul
grep -iR sslv2 /nginx/config/directory
#
rascul
see if anything pops up
#
aaronpk
i apparently have sslv2 set on some other domains

i'm gonna take it out of the rest of the vhosts
#

this one is a bit better, i'll get around to putting it in /nginx sooner or later http://indiewebcamp.com/User:Rascul.io/ssl
#
rascul
the cipher list i mean is probably better, but you might find some other stuff that's not yet mentioned in /nginx
#
aaronpk
i do like the idea of putting all that in the http block
#
rascul
i did it like that because that stuff won't change per host
#
aaronpk
yeah
#
rascul
took me and ssllabs.com awhile to get that cipher list right, every client is supported by the best available cipher
# snarfed joined the channel
